Fuzzy letters and fused logos are common FDM failures. Here is how to design, slice, and orient text so it prints cleanly the first time.

You have seen it before: a nameplate, keycap, or custom logo that looks perfect on screen comes out of the printer with letters fused together, strokes so thin they vanish, or engraved detail so shallow it might as well not be there. The printer is not broken. FDM simply hits its resolution limits when you ask it to reproduce fine typography.

Choose Embossed, Engraved, or Cut-Through Before You Model

The first decision is how the text sits on the part. Each approach prints differently.

  • Embossed text is raised. It catches light and shadow, which makes it easy to read from a distance. The downside: thin raised strokes can be fragile and may wobble during printing.
  • Engraved text is recessed into the surface. It is protected and more forgiving, but the recess must be deep enough to stay visible. Too shallow and plastic will fill it in.
  • Cut-through creates a hole right through the part. It is best for backlit signs or grilles, but the opening needs to be wide enough for your nozzle.

Match the method to the job. A raised logo on a sign reads well. A serial number belongs recessed. A backlit panel wants holes.

Pick Fonts That Survive Layer Lines

Thin serifs and delicate scripts look elegant on screen, but they smear when a 0.4 mm nozzle tries to trace them. Use bold, sans-serif fonts with thick, even strokes. Arial, Helvetica, Montserrat, and similar geometric faces are safe starting points.

Pay attention to three details:

  • Stroke thickness. The thinnest part of any letter should be at least as wide as your nozzle. On a 0.4 mm nozzle, aim for strokes around 0.5 mm or more.
  • Spacing. Tight letter spacing can fuse counters (the holes inside letters like "o" or "e") shut. Open the tracking slightly.
  • Corners. Tiny serifs and sharp corners are where layer lines round off. Simple letterforms survive better.

Orient Text on the Right Surface

Where text sits changes how cleanly it prints.

Flat top or bottom faces give the best results. Raised text stacks full layers; engraved text shows a clean recess as the top layers bridge it.

Curved surfaces need a wrap or emboss tool instead of a flat sketch poked into the side. Letters on the steepest part of the curve may stretch.

Vertical walls are the hardest. The text builds from the side, so every layer boundary appears as a stacked edge. Avoid vertical text unless the part forces it.

Slice for Detail, Not Speed

Finer layers make finer text. Drop layer height to 0.08-0.12 mm for detail work instead of the usual 0.2 mm. It takes longer, but the edges resolve with much smaller steps.

A smaller nozzle helps. A 0.25 mm nozzle holds more detail than a 0.4 mm, though it prints slower and clogs more easily. Most slicers also let you reduce line width slightly below the nozzle diameter to capture finer features.

Test Before You Commit

Print a small sample tile with your chosen font, size, and orientation. Check whether counters stay open, raised strokes survive, and engraved recesses read clearly. One five-minute test tile can save an hour-long print and a roll of wasted filament.

Text and logos are not magic. They are just small features, and small features need the right design, font, orientation, and slice settings. Get those four things right and your labels will look like you meant them to.
