Würth Additive winds down, BigRep leaves Frankfurt, and Ampera prints a full-scale nuclear module, the business and energy headlines in 3D printing today.
It's a busy day on the business and energy side of additive manufacturing. A distributor-led digital-inventory pioneer is shutting down, one of large-format printing's best-known names is leaving the public markets, and a Florida startup just printed what it claims is the first full-scale nuclear reactor module. Here's the rundown.
Würth Additive Group closes its doors
Würth Additive Group (WAG), the additive-manufacturing business unit of the German Würth conglomerate, has confirmed it is winding down. The closure came via a roughly 50-word statement on LinkedIn, with no public explanation beyond a pledge to an 'orderly closure of all operations.' Stakeholders with active accounts or outstanding arrangements will be contacted directly by the company's Closing Office.
The shutdown didn't come entirely out of the blue. CEO AJ Strandquist announced two months ago that he was leaving the Würth Group after 14 years, and Director of Global Technology Mikhail Gladkikh signalled three weeks ago that he was 'exploring his next chapter' and referenced the wind-down of the division. WAG launched in 2021 and was best known for its AM-driven Digital Inventory Services (DIS) platform, pitched as a way to let companies print spare parts on demand instead of holding physical stock.
BigRep delists from Frankfurt, liquidates parent
BigRep, the Berlin-based large-format 3D printing specialist, is being sold and delisted from the Frankfurt Stock Exchange. The move is the latest SPAC casualty in additive manufacturing: BigRep went public in 2024 through a merger with SMG Technology Acceleration SE, rebranding as BigRep SE with a buy-and-build strategy that included the acquisition of Austrian competitor HAGE3D. Despite partnerships with Phillips Federal and a move into the auto aftermarket, the company posted annual losses and attempted a reorganisation last year.
Shareholders approved the sale and liquidation of the holding company at an extraordinary general meeting. The shares will be picked up by De Krassny GmbH, Koehler Invest GmbH, and Hage Holding GmbH at an undisclosed price based on an independent valuation of BigRep GmbH. Crucially, BigRep says it intends to keep operating under new management — so the printers aren't going anywhere, even if the ticker is.
RA Wind funds robotic blade printing
Norway's RA Wind AS secured a 500,000 NOK (about $52,000) grant from Innovation Norway to develop onsite, robot-controlled 3D printing of wind turbine blades. The young company, founded in 2023, wants to print blades where they're needed, cutting out the huge fixed molds and long-haul logistics of conventional composite layup. The funding supports technical and commercial clarification work, including process simulation and small composite prototypes, with a pilot factory of up to four large additive robots as the next step.
Ampera completes a 3D-printed nuclear reactor module
Florida-based Ampera says it has finished production of what it describes as the first full-scale 3D printed nuclear reactor module. Unveiled at the company's Palm Beach Gardens innovation center, the module pairs a silicon-carbide pressure vessel with a spherical monolithic gyroid core, designed to run for up to 30 years without refueling as part of a subcritical, thorium-based microreactor.
Ampera submitted a pre-application letter to the US Nuclear Regulatory Commission this winter and in April entered a strategic collaboration with Monaco shipping company Scorpio Tankers to commercialise microreactors for maritime and related applications. 'This next-generation nuclear core and pressure vessel sets the foundation for factory-built, mass-produced nuclear energy,' said founder and CEO Brian Matthews.
Taken together, today's briefs paint a familiar 2026 picture: the hype-cycle names are consolidating and retreating from public markets, while a new wave of energy and infrastructure plays is leaning hard on additive manufacturing to do things legacy industry can't.
