Dr. Jeffrey Graves will retire from 3D Systems as CEO and from the board, with the company targeting a replacement before the end of 2026.
3D Systems announced on August 4 that President and CEO Dr. Jeffrey Graves will step down from his role and retire from the Board of Directors. The company has engaged an executive search firm to identify a successor and expects to name a replacement before the end of 2026.
Graves will remain in his current role until a new CEO is appointed, then serve as a consultant for six months to support the transition. Board Chairman Chip McClure praised Graves for strengthening the company's operating foundation and sharpening its strategic focus over the past several years.
Q2 2026 financial backdrop
The leadership transition was announced alongside the company's second-quarter 2026 results. Revenue came in at $94.6 million, essentially flat year-over-year once you strip out revenue from the Geomagic, 3DXpert, and Oqton businesses divested in 2025. The company posted a net loss of $12.9 million for the quarter, a sharp swing from the $104 million net profit recorded in the same period last year. That prior-year figure was inflated by the $125.7 million sale of Geomagic.
Healthcare revenue grew 6.8% year-over-year, and aerospace and defense revenue rose more than 20%. Those segments are clearly carrying the business right now.
What Graves leaves behind
Graves joined 3D Systems in May 2020 and oversaw a period of aggressive restructuring. He led cost reduction initiatives, sold off Quickparts and the company's software portfolio, and steered 3D Systems through a multi-year industry downturn. In his own statement, Graves said the company is well positioned to benefit as capital investment activity strengthens.
The board's statement was more direct. McClure noted that the company has made meaningful progress in positioning itself for long-term profitability and growth. The succession search gives the board a chance to shape the next chapter at one of additive manufacturing's oldest names.
What to watch
3D Systems has spent years narrowing its focus. The CEO change does not signal a pivot away from that strategy. What it does mean is that the new leader will inherit a leaner but still fragile business. Healthcare and defense are growing. The core materials and printer businesses are under pressure from cheaper, faster competitors. Whoever takes the job will need to prove that the restructuring actually built a sustainable company, not just a smaller one.
