ACMI Launches $3M Horizon Manufacturing Cup for Defense Startups

Three Million in Non-Dilutive Funding

The American Center for Manufacturing and Innovation announced the Horizon Manufacturing Cup, a fast-pitch competition that will award $3 million in non-dilutive funding to early-stage manufacturing startups. The program focuses on defense applications and is open to companies working on technologies that can move from prototype to production.

Winners gain access to ACMI's National Security Industrial Hub in Indiana, which includes metal 3D printing systems. The hub already houses an EOS M4 ONYX and the AMCM M 8K, a machine built for large mission-critical defense and aerospace components like rocket chambers and fuel tanks.

Infrastructure as Part of the Prize

ACMI's approach pairs capital with physical factory access. Non-dilutive funding means founders keep their equity, but the real draw may be the prototyping and production infrastructure. Early-stage AM companies often stall at scale not because of design problems but because they cannot secure factory time. The Horizon Cup removes that bottleneck by embedding winners inside an operating industrial campus.

The competition builds on ACMI's existing defense work. Its federal arm helped secure a $2 million defense contract for Supernova Industries to 3D print energetic materials for weapon systems. The pattern is consistent: fund the startup, give it a lab, and let the Pentagon become the first customer.

Defense Funding as Standard On-Ramp

The Horizon Cup sits inside a broader trend. The Air Force's AFWERX program has run comparable awards, including a $1.25 million SBIR contract for Solideon to build a deployable additive manufacturing cell for front-line use. Defense departments worldwide are treating non-dilutive capital plus infrastructure access as the standard pipeline for scaling AM startups.

Applications for the Horizon Manufacturing Cup are open. The competition targets companies ready to validate hardware at production scale, not just those with a concept on a screen.
