A free generator in Bambu Lab's MakerWorld platform converts images into foldable lithophane fans. No CAD skills required.

How It Works

Bambu Lab added a new tool to its MakerWorld MakerLab section. It generates foldable fans with a lithophane effect. The principle is simple. Thin walls let more light pass through. Thick walls block it. Together they create an image.

The generator converts the brightness values of any image into varying wall thicknesses across the fan blades. No CAD model is needed. You upload a photo, adjust the layout, and export a ready-to-slice 3MF file.

Two Layout Modes

The free version offers a single-image layout that covers the entire fan. It also supports a sectional mode where the blades carry separate slices of one picture. Each layer can be moved, scaled, rotated, or reordered. Text layers work the same way, though custom fonts require the paid upgrade.

Free vs Premium

Basic designs, the standard fan shape, and 2D and 3D previews cost nothing. A Premium package includes custom image uploads, multiple image layers, extra fan shapes, and text controls. It is a one-time fee of $9.99.

Print Settings

The sample prints in the demo were made with Bambu Lab PLA Basic in Jade White. The light color passes through thin sections well, making gradients and fine details visible. Any translucent PLA should work, but lighter colors give better results.
