Bambu Lab's latest slicer can now generate step-by-step assembly instructions directly from a STEP file, exporting PDF or video walkthroughs with one click.

Bambu Studio Now Writes Assembly Instructions for You

Bambu Lab has released version 2.8 of Bambu Studio, and the headline feature is a slicer that can generate assembly guides. Import a STEP file, and the software proposes a step-by-step build sequence for multi-part models. From there, you can annotate each stage, add labels, and export a PDF, Markdown file, or MP4 video.

The feature targets a real workflow problem. Multi-part prints are common on machines like the P1S and X1C: articulated figures, enclosures, mechanical assemblies, anything that arrives as a bag of parts. Until now, documenting how those parts fit together was a manual task. Designers cobbled together exploded diagrams in CAD, took screenshots, or wrote vague text descriptions. The results varied wildly in quality.

Bambu Studio's approach uses the part hierarchy embedded in STEP files. Because STEP preserves assembly relationships that STL discards, the slicer can reason about which parts belong together. The software proposes an initial sequence, but you remain in control: reorder steps, merge stages, or break out sub-assemblies through an object tree. Two viewing modes help during editing. X-ray mode makes the model semi-transparent so internal components are visible. Show current step only mode isolates the parts being added at that moment, stripping away the distraction of completed or pending pieces.

The output is practical. A PDF gives you a printable instruction sheet. An MP4 provides an animated walkthrough that someone can follow while they work. Markdown covers the case where you want to paste instructions into a MakerWorld description or product listing. The export includes exploded-view animation, snap-fit callouts, rectangle labels, and text annotations.

The feature does have limits. It requires STEP input, not STL or OBJ. Models downloaded from MakerWorld in mesh format will not benefit because they lack the assembly relationship data the tool needs. The interface also hides the Assembly Guide icon behind the Overview tool, so the workflow is not immediately obvious. You need to load a STEP file, open Overview, and then the steps generate automatically.

For makers who design their own multi-part models in CAD, this is a meaningful time saver. For the Bambu Lab ecosystem, it is a sign that the company sees slicer software as a place to add value beyond just generating G-code.
