Bambu Lab ended X1-series support with a surprise firmware release in August 2026. Here is what changed and what it means for the thousands of X1 Carbon owners still printing.
The X1 Carbon Era Is Over, but Bambu Kept Its Promise
On March 31, 2026, Bambu Lab quietly discontinued the entire X1 line. The X1 Carbon (X1C), the enterprise X1E, and the base X1 all reached end of life simultaneously. Nothing dramatic happened to existing machines: they kept printing. But the clock started ticking on official support.
Then, on August 4, 2026, Bambu shipped firmware 01.12.00.00 for the X1 and X1C, and 01.03.00.00 for the X1E. It was the first update in 238 days. The release included security patches, improved purge chute pile-up detection, and farm-mode plate clearing on the device screen for the X1C. The update was more than maintenance: it was confirmation that Bambu's support commitment was real, not just a warranty checkbox.
Bambu has promised firmware fixes through May 2027. After that, the X1 series stops receiving updates. The printers keep working, of course. They just stop getting new features or bug fixes.
What Replaced the X1 Carbon
The X2D arrived on April 14, 2026, at $649, replacing the X1C's slot in the lineup at $550 less. The price cut was the first signal that Bambu was serious about putting the X1 era behind it.
The X2D is a significant hardware step forward in some ways. It pairs a direct-drive main extruder with a secondary Bowden extruder on the toolhead, giving it dual-nozzle capability without the weight penalty of a fully direct-drive dual system. The build volume is 256 x 256 x 260 mm, matching the X1C's footprint. The active chamber heater runs at 65°C, a meaningful upgrade over the X1C's passive chamber. The hardened steel rods, three-layer air filtration, AI camera, and tool-free quick-release nozzles are all carryovers from the H2 and A1 lines that arrived after the X1C launched.
The catch is the secondary Bowden extruder. The motor sits at the back of the machine and feeds through a tube to the toolhead. That arrangement keeps the toolhead light, which helps with speed, but it limits the auxiliary nozzle's ability to print flexible materials like TPU without adjustment. For users who mostly print single-material parts and occasionally run a second color for supports, the X2D handles that well. For anyone treating dual extrusion as a primary feature, the setup requires more accommodation than a true dual-direct-drive system.
The X1E Gap Is Real
The situation is different for former X1E owners. The enterprise model topped out at a 320°C nozzle and targeted users who needed high-temperature engineering materials like PA-CF, PC, and other advanced polymers. The X2D maxes out at 300°C, which covers ABS, ASA, and Nylon comfortably, but not the higher-temperature materials that drove X1E purchases.
Bambu's answer for that market is the H2S at $1,249 and the H2D at $1,899. The H2D adds true IDEX (two fully independent toolheads), a higher-temperature capable nozzle, and a laser engraver attachment. It is the closest thing to an X1E successor in capability, even though it sits in a different product series and costs considerably more.
Parts and the Used Market
Bambu has committed to keeping replacement parts available for the X1 series: hotends, nozzles, belts, boards, and other serviceable components. The company has not given a specific end date for parts availability, only that they will remain available for years. That commitment matters. The X1 Carbon sold in large numbers and thousands of them are still in daily use. A parts guarantee is also a signal to the used market that a second-hand X1C is not a dead-end purchase.
In practice, the X1C is not obsolete. It still prints well, parts are still available, and the August firmware release proved Bambu is honouring its support timeline rather than quietly walking away. If a part fails, it can be sourced. When firmware support ends in May 2027, the printer keeps working on its last firmware version. It simply stops receiving updates.
Should X1 Owners Upgrade?
That depends on what you print. For general single- and dual-color work in PLA, PETG, ASA, and Nylon, the X2D at $649 is a straightforward upgrade: a newer machine with active chamber heating, better filtration, and ongoing firmware support at a significantly lower price than the X1C's original $1,199 launch price.
For X1E owners whose workflow depends on 320°C+ nozzle temperatures, the X2D is not a direct replacement. The H2D is, but at nearly three times the price. That is an expensive gap in Bambu's lineup for a segment that Bambu itself cultivated when it launched the X1E.
For everyone else, the August firmware release is worth installing if you have not already updated. The security patches and purge detection improvements are useful, and it is a concrete reminder that Bambu is still honouring its commitments to the platform that built its reputation.
