Creality has filed a patent for an integrated filament cutter mounted directly inside the toolhead, eliminating one of the biggest pain points with multi material printing.

Creality Patents Integrated Filament Cutter

Creality has published a new patent filing this week outlining a compact filament cutter mounted directly inside the print hotend assembly. If implemented, this would fix one of the most annoying recurring problems with multi material FDM printing.

The Problem

Right now every multi material system has to pull filament back out of the hotend before a tool change. This almost always leaves a small melted blob on the end of the filament, which causes jams, grinding and failed swaps. External cutters exist but add bulk and require extra travel moves.

How It Works

Creality's design uses a tiny spring loaded cutter blade mounted just above the heat break. When filament is retracted at the end of a material change, the blade automatically trims the end cleanly before it exits the toolhead.

The patent claims this design adds less than 8mm to the total toolhead height, which means it will fit on their existing i7 and upcoming K3 platforms without redesign.

Timing

This lines up with leaks we have seen about Creality's next generation multi material system. It is very likely this feature will ship with the K3 Plus later this year.
