A $40 million Navy-backed 3D printing facility in Guam is on track to reach full capacity in February 2027, aiming to cut ship-part wait times across the Indo-Pacific.
The Guam Additive Materials and Manufacturing Accelerator, or GAMMA, is now targeting full operating capacity by February 2027. The update revises an earlier timeline that called for initial operations by late summer 2026, and it signals the complexity of standing up a defense-grade additive manufacturing facility from a cold start.
GAMMA sits in an 8,000-square-foot warehouse at Dededo's Pacific Industrial Park. It is managed by the Applied Science and Technology Research Organization of America, or ASTRO America, under a $40 million mandate from the U.S. Navy's Maritime Industrial Base Program office. The goal is straightforward: stop shipping submarine, ambulance, and fire-engine parts across the Pacific, and start making them on Guam instead.
Equipment already installed includes microscopy systems, digital inspection tools, robotic welders, and CNC milling machines. Higher-grade gear, such as an X-ray CT scanner for non-destructive testing, is still on the way. That sequencing matters. The Navy certifies parts against strict naval standards, and without on-site volumetric inspection, density and porosity checks still have to happen elsewhere. That reintroduces the logistics delay GAMMA is supposed to eliminate.
Neal Orringer, co-founder and board chairperson of ASTRO America, did not mince words during a recent update: "This factory in February 2027 is going to be a world-class factory that rivals any major advanced manufacturing factory anywhere in the world. And it just happens to be in Guam."
The facility's principal customer will be Submarine Squadron 15 at Naval Base Guam, with pump impellers and other hard-to-source components as early priorities. The Air Force and Marine Corps are also evaluating GAMMA for ground-vehicle parts that corrode quickly in Guam's tropical climate. Beyond the military, the plan is to open the center to local agencies, emergency-response fleets, and the Guam Power Authority once Navy requirements are met.
Workforce and education
ASTRO has partnered with the University of Guam and the Colorado School of Mines to build a local talent pipeline. A certified civil engineering program already exists on the island. A mechanical engineering program is planned, though ASTRO wants to push the start date to fall 2027 rather than rush it. The workforce is expected to grow from a handful of staff and interns today to roughly 100 employees within six years.
Why it matters
GAMMA is part of a broader Pentagon push to treat additive manufacturing as a readiness tool, not a prototyping curiosity. If it hits full capacity on schedule, it will give the Indo-Pacific command a local source for critical parts that currently take months to arrive by ship. That is a logistics advantage, not just a manufacturing one.
