Real metal printers cost a fortune. These four filament types get you a convincing metal look straight off the print bed.
The cheap trick most people skip
Plain PLA and a rattle can of metallic spray paint is still the fastest way to fake metal, and the results can be shockingly good. The secret is prep. Sand the layer lines, hit the part with self-etching auto primer, then lay down metallic paint. Wargamers have printed and finished tabletop armies this way for years, and the same approach works for brackets, knobs, and display pieces.
Silk PLA for shine without the brush
Silk PLA costs a little more than standard PLA but comes off the bed looking polished. Bambu Lab's PLA Silk+ runs about $23 for a 1KG roll and ships in gold, titan gray, silver, and rose gold. The gloss comes from added elastomers, which also make silk PLA a touch weaker than plain PLA, so skip it for parts that need to take a grip or a load. Bambu's Plus version improves layer adhesion over older silk formulas.
PLA-Metal for the anodized look
Despite the name, PLA-Metal contains no metal. That is good news for printers with a standard brass nozzle, because it prints like ordinary PLA. Bambu sells it in cobalt blue, oxide green, iridium gold, copper brown, and iron gray at $25 a spool. eSUN's ePLA-Metal comes in antique brass and gold for $27. Both give a solid or anodized look straight from the printer, no painting required.
Metal composites when you want the real thing
If you want a part that behaves like metal, not just looks like it, reach for a composite with actual metal powder. Protopasta's iron PLA is ferrous: it is magnetic, it rusts if you encourage it, and it has a satisfying metal thunk when you drop it on a bench. These filaments are abrasive, so you will want a hardened steel nozzle, and they print cooler and slower than plain PLA. The trade is worth it for props, hardware, and anything where weight and feel matter.
Which one should you grab
Start with silk PLA for display pieces and gifts. Use PLA-Metal when you want a clean anodized finish and do not want to paint. Keep composite filament for the few prints where the magnetic or rustable character earns its place. And when all else fails, a $5 can of metallic spray and an afternoon of sanding still beats buying a metal printer you will never afford.
None of these match the strength of a real metal part. They are about looks, and on that front they close the gap more than you would expect for the price.
