NAVSEA has approved a metal 3D printing process at NUWC Keyport, making it the first US naval warfare center cleared to produce powder bed fusion parts in 17-4PH stainless steel.

What Just Happened

Naval Undersea Warfare Center Keyport in Washington state has become the first of the Navy's ten warfare centers to receive formal approval from Naval Sea Systems Command for a metal additive manufacturing process. The approval covers powder bed fusion of 17-4PH stainless steel, the same alloy used in high-stress submarine and ship components.

The milestone follows seven years of work. NUWC Keyport launched the program as a Naval Innovative Science and Engineering project, then moved it through a formal qualification track. The process was validated on an EOS M290, one of the most widely deployed PBF systems in industrial settings today.

Why the Process Had to Be Proven

Metal 3D printing produces parts with different internal characteristics than forged or machined equivalents. Porosity, residual stress, and layer adhesion vary depending on machine settings, powder batch, and part geometry. For the Navy to accept AM parts into the supply chain, those variables had to be bounded and documented.

Keyport's team did more than demonstrate repeatable builds. They tested what happens when the printer loses power mid-build. The researchers deliberately stopped a 12-hour job and restarted it to measure whether the resulting part still met specification. That kind of edge-case data is exactly what qualification boards demand before signing off on a new process.

What Changes Now

The approval lets Keyport develop and validate part-specific manufacturing processes that can be shared digitally across the NAVSEA enterprise. Parts that previously required long lead times or custom tooling can now be printed on demand at a warfare center with the credentials to back them.

Austal USA has already stood up the Digital SEA platform, which opens that technical data to Navy suppliers who want to provide metal AM parts under contract. Barnes Global Advisors is separately building a qualifications database for Inconel processes under a BPMI contract, which will extend the same rigor to high-temperature alloys.

Bryce Weber, platform readiness and endurance technology lead at Keyport's Undersea Systems and Sustainment Engineering Department, described the milestone as a key enabler for NAVSEA's broader additive manufacturing push: these qualification credentials allow Keyport to develop and validate part-specific manufacturing processes that can be digitally shared, creating outsized impact.

The Bigger Picture

The US Navy has effectively funded a significant share of American metal AM maturation this decade. This approval marks a shift from experimental investment to operational payoff. Metal 3D printing for defense is no longer a research curiosity: it is now a qualified manufacturing process inside the supply chain.
