Nippon Express Holdings has deepened its partnership with Instalimb, putting more money into the Japanese startup that uses AI and 3D printing to make low-cost prosthetic limbs for emerging markets.

Nippon Express Holdings has entered into a capital and business alliance with Instalimb, Inc., making an additional investment in the Japanese startup's Series C funding round. The partnership deepens a relationship that began in February 2024 and signals Instalimb's push to expand beyond Asia into Africa, Latin America, and other emerging markets.

Instalimb develops and manufactures 3D-printed prosthetic legs and orthotics using proprietary AI algorithms and dedicated 3D printers. The company's process starts with a 3D scan of the patient's residual limb, followed by AI-assisted socket design and additive manufacturing. The result is a custom-fit prosthetic that costs roughly one-tenth of traditionally fabricated equivalents and can be produced in as little as 24 hours.

The NX Group will support Instalimb's global expansion through its logistics network, covering warehouse operations, international transport of 3D printers and filament, customs clearance, and supply chain strategy across new target countries. The companies specifically named South America, Africa, South Asia, and ASEAN as next markets.

Instalimb currently operates its global central fabrication hub in India, running its own manufacturing facilities for prosthetics, orthotics, and the specialised 3D printers and filament used to produce them. The company also has an established presence in the Philippines, where it began operations in 2019.

CEO Yutaka Tokushima said the additional investment and strategic partnership would help the company build the stable, efficient global supply chains needed to expand. An NX Group executive added that the partnership would explore opportunities for Instalimb's prosthetic users to participate in warehouse and logistics operations.

The move comes as 3D printing continues to reshape medical device manufacturing, particularly in regions where conventional prosthetics are priced well beyond what most amputees can afford. Instalimb's carbon-fibre-reinforced polylactic acid prosthetics are lightweight and designed for manual labourers who need durable, functional limbs for daily work.
