The Bondtech INDX toolchanger turns the Prusa CORE One Plus into an eight-material printer, but installation is a long, detailed process.

What the INDX actually is

The Bondtech INDX is an add-on that swaps the CORE One Plus single extruder for a dock holding up to eight toolheads. Each head has its own filament path, so the printer can change colors or materials without the long prime towers most multi-material systems require. Induction heaters bring each nozzle to temperature in seconds. A small internal tray catches purge pellets, and a silicone wipe pad cleans the nozzle between swaps.

This is not a beginner upgrade. The Founder's Edition shipped as a kit to 1,000 buyers. Converting a CORE One Plus takes anywhere from seven to 12 hours, according to Prusa's own installation guide. You will disassemble the printer, remove the Nextruder, install a new carriage, mount a tool dock, run wiring, and flash firmware. If the idea of turning screws inside a precision machine makes you nervous, wait for Prusa to offer pre-assembled versions, which should arrive later this year.

Unboxing the Founder's Edition

The box is heavy and organized. Inside you will find the INDX carriage, eight passive toolheads, spool holders, a dock frame, sensors, fasteners, and a USB drive with firmware. The build quality feels solid. The toolheads are simple: aluminum bodies with a self-adjusting dual-gear feeder and a contactless temperature sensor. There is no motor on the toolhead itself. The main carriage drives all eight tools.

Before starting, print a snap-rivet remover. The CORE One Plus uses nylon rivets throughout the chassis. Several builders report launching rivets across the room because they pried them from the wrong side. A printed removal tool saves paint and frustration. You will also want a small screw assortment and a tap for M3 holes, because some of the printed parts ship with tight threads.

The tricky parts

Head cable routing is the step most builders complain about. The INDX uses a thick ribbon cable and a thinner LED cable that must thread through the same channel. Feed the nylon pull-string first, then the cable, then secure the cover. If you try to shove both cables in at once, the tension will yank the string back out.

The tool-dock magnets are another pain point. The dock uses 3 mm by 8 mm magnets pressed into tight holes. Builders recommend using a spring clamp or a printed magnet-insertion jig. Hand pressure is not enough, and slipping can send a magnet flying.

Z-height calibration for the spool holders also trips people up. The guide says raise the bed to 180 mm, but several builders report that only exposes two of the four screws. Raise it to 200 mm instead.

After the hardware is assembled, flash the firmware from the USB drive, not from Prusa Connect. Run the self-test with the door closed. Two errors show up often: a heater temperature window that flags 262 C against an 185-255 C range, and a tool offset out-of-bounds message. Both tend to clear after a firmware update and a calibration run with filament loaded.

First impressions

Once calibrated, the INDX does what it promises. Tool changes happen in seconds. The purge waste is tiny, maybe a few millimeters of filament per swap. In normal use you will not think about the toolchanger. It just works.

The eight-tool setup is overkill for most hobbyists. A four-tool kit costs $749 at retail. The eight-tool kit runs $999. If you only print in two colors or materials, the cost is hard to justify. But if you run a small print farm, need frequent material swaps, or just want the bragging rights, the INDX is the most polished toolchanger Prusa has ever shipped.

Bondtech also sells a Development Kit for Voron and other custom frames, starting at $487.50 for one toolhead. That opens the INDX architecture to a whole community of self-built printers.

Should you buy it?

Wait for the retail release if you are not comfortable dissecting a precision printer. The Founder's Edition is a beta program dressed as a collector's item. Prusa is taking feedback to fix assembly pain points before the retail launch. If you want a CORE One Plus out of the box, fully assembled, with the INDX already installed, hold out for the end-of-year option. That version will likely cost more, but the time saved is worth it for most buyers.
