Prusa's INDX kit swaps the CORE One's single nozzle for up to eight, with almost no purge waste. Here is what the specs and early units tell us.
What the Prusa INDX actually is
The Prusa INDX is not a new printer. It is a conversion kit co-developed by Prusa Research and Bondtech that turns a CORE One or CORE One+ into a machine capable of printing with up to eight materials, each with its own dedicated nozzle. If you were hoping to buy a standalone box and plug it in, that product does not exist. You are buying an upgrade that assumes you already own, or plan to buy, a CORE One.
That single fact shapes the whole review. INDX targets owners who like the CORE One but want multicolor and multi-material printing without the purge waste that comes with a single-nozzle system like Bambu's AMS or Prusa's own MMU3.
How the toolchanger works
The name splits cleanly: IN for induction heating, DX for Dynamic eXtruder. The architecture is Bondtech's, with Prusa handling firmware integration, the toolhead PCB, XY offset calibration, and PrusaSlicer profiles.
There are two physical parts. The INDX Smart Head replaces the printer's Nextruder. It carries a Dynamic Dual Drive extruder, an induction coil, a contactless temperature sensor, and the LoadCell carried over from the Nextruder for first-layer sensing. This is the only active component, the only part that moves filament, makes heat, and reads temperature.
Everything else is passive. Up to eight tools dock in a rack bolted to the frame. Each one is just a filament path, a heatsink, and a nozzle. No electronics, no heaters, no wires. The active head carries an induction coil that heats whichever passive tool it picks up, then returns it to the dock at 35 mm center-to-center spacing.
Why this matters for waste
Systems like the AMS or MMU3 switch materials by retracting and purging filament through a single nozzle. That purge is wasted plastic, and it adds up fast on multicolor prints. INDX gives every material its own nozzle, parked until needed. Near-zero purge waste, no cross-contamination between materials, and you can mix nozzle sizes on the same print, from 0.25 mm up to 1.0 mm.
On paper, that closes the gap between budget filament switchers and high-end toolchangers like the Prusa XL. The catch is that INDX only fits the CORE One and CORE One+ for now. There is no path to the MK4S, MK3S+, or XL, though CORE One L support is planned for later in 2026.

Here is where the enthusiasm needs a leash. As of late June 2026, INDX is a first-batch product running firmware 6.6.0, with a published list of known issues and no independent hands-on reviews yet. The Bondtech Founders Edition shipped later than planned because of a last-minute quality fix.
So this is less a finished-product review and more a clear-eyed look at what the specs promise and what the total cost of ownership looks like. You are buying into a platform that is early in its life. If you want proven multi-material printing today, the MMU3 and AMS are the safer bets. If you want the lowest possible purge waste and are comfortable riding the early-adopter curve, INDX is the more interesting machine.

Installation is a real upgrade, not a plug-and-play add-on.
The big question is whether Prusa and Bondtech can clear the firmware and reliability issues fast enough to earn the waitlist crowd. The hardware concept is sound. The software is where the next few months will be won or lost.
