Selle Italia's new Unica saddle uses 3D-printed internal padding customised to each rider's pressure data. The saddle ships in about three weeks after an in-store analysis.

Selle Italia has launched Unica, a saddle with 3D-printed internal padding designed around each individual rider's pressure data. The company says the approach offers differentiated cushioning without the one-size-fits-all compromise of conventional saddles.

How it works

The process starts at an authorized retailer. Cyclists undergo a pressure analysis using idmatch, Selle Italia's measurement system. That data drives the design of the saddle's reticular inner structure, a network of small interconnected cells printed specifically for that rider. The exterior shell and overall shape remain standard, but the 3D-printed core adapts to the rider's pressure distribution.

Selle Italia says the customised structure optimises pressure distribution and support, which in turn helps maintain good posture for longer rides. The saddle is not limited to professional racers. The company positions it for any cyclist, regardless of skill level.

What to expect

Once the in-store analysis is complete, the retailer places an order. Manufacturing and shipping take roughly three weeks, with tracking available through a web app. Selle Italia notes that if a rider changes bikes or riding position, a saddle replacement is not always needed. Adjusting the saddle position often solves the problem. Repeating the pressure analysis is only recommended when changes are significant enough to alter the rider's pressure distribution.

The Unica saddle is now available through authorized retailers. Selle Italia has not disclosed which 3D printing technology is used to produce the internal padding.
