SHINING 3D updated its FreeScan lineup with three new metrology scanners, each tied to specific production scenarios from automotive sheet metal to large-scale inspection.

SHINING 3D Metrology introduced three upgraded 3D scanning systems during a September 9 webinar, each targeted at a specific manufacturing inspection scenario rather than marketed as a general-purpose refresh. The lineup includes the FreeScan Combo+ Wireless, the FreeScan Trak Nova+, and the FreeScan Trak ProW+.

FreeScan Combo+ Wireless: Untethered Shop-Floor Inspection

The Combo+ Wireless retains the compact, lightweight body of its predecessor but moves to a fully wireless operating mode using Wi-Fi 7. It keeps the dual light source design: blue laser lines for reflective surfaces and an infrared mode for feature-rich workpieces without coded markers. The new high-speed scan mode uses 93 blue laser lines and runs at up to 180 FPS, while a detailed scan mode deploys 25 parallel laser lines for intricate geometry. The manufacturer lists accuracy at 0.02 mm and volumetric accuracy of 0.02 + 0.03 mm/m.

SHINING 3D positions this scanner for automotive sheet metal inspection, where untethered movement around large panels matters. Every unit is calibrated in the company's ISO/IEC 17025-accredited lab and tested to ISO 10360 standards.

FreeScan Trak Nova+: Dynamic Tracking for Server and Large-Part Inspection

The Trak Nova+ combines dynamic tracking with a detachable handheld laser scanner. Its scanning rate reaches up to 7.6 million points per second, and it supports multiple laser scanning modes. The tracker uses SHINING 3D's patented video photogrammetry, which eliminates coded markers by integrating a calibration rod for real-time marker verification through video capture. The system's field of view extends up to 2.6 by 2.2 meters, making it suitable for scanning large machinery such as excavators and bulldozers.

The company plans to use this scanner in server manufacturing inspection demonstrations, where speed and marker-free operation reduce setup time on repetitive production runs.

FreeScan Trak ProW+: Large-Volume, Long-Range Scanning

The ProW+ extends the tracking distance to 8.6 meters and expands single-station coverage to 156 cubic meters, cutting the number of leapfrog repositioning moves needed for very large workpieces. It supports marker-free scanning at up to 7.6 million points per second, wireless operation with an optional power bank, and integrated computing for real-time data processing. The manufacturer lists accuracy at 0.023 mm and volumetric accuracy that tightens with smaller measuring ranges.

Multiple ProW+ units can work together to cover extremely large objects, offering a modular approach to full-field scanning without sacrificing traceability.

Scenario-Based Selling

Rather than pushing raw specification numbers, SHINING 3D organized the webinar around four representative production scenarios: automotive sheet metal inspection with the Combo+ Wireless, server manufacturing with the Trak Nova+, large-scale automotive inspection with the Trak ProW+, and precision component measurement with the OptimScan Q Series. The message is that scanner choice should depend on application size, complexity, measurement requirements, inspection environment, and production workflow.

The refresh is modest in scope but clear in positioning. Each scanner is tied to a named use case, and the upgrades focus on wireless freedom, scan speed, and marker-free operation rather than headline-grabbing resolution leaps. For manufacturers already invested in SHINING 3D workflows, the new models extend existing capabilities without a complete system overhaul.
