The Next Layer went live with the Sovol M1D seven-toolhead IDEX printer as the Kickstarter campaign pushed past $3 million from more than 1,700 backers.

The Sovol M1D has been one of the most talked-about Kickstarter launches this summer, and on August 25 The Next Layer hosted a live unboxing that gave viewers their first close look at the machine in person. The stream arrived at a good moment: the campaign had already raised over $3 million and was still running, with backers now expecting delivery in November 2026.

What the M1D actually is

Sovol describes the M1D as a hybrid IDEX system rather than a conventional tool changer. It pairs one fixed dual-extruder carriage with six interchangeable toolheads, giving a total of seven print heads. Each head heats independently, so the standby tools stay ready instead of cooling down between swaps. The auto-grip mechanism changes heads in about five seconds, and the system supports single-nozzle, multi-head, copy, and mirror modes.

The build volume depends on the mode. Single-nozzle printing covers 300 x 300 x 350 mm. The 6-head switching mode keeps that same envelope, while the 7-head overlap mode trims the X axis to 240 mm. Copy and mirror modes are smaller still, which is worth knowing if you plan to use the M1D for production jigs rather than decorative multi-color models.

Two models, one core idea

Sovol is offering the M1D in Essential and Advanced configurations. The Essential version is an open-frame printer. The Advanced model adds a full enclosure with heated chamber air up to 60 degrees Celsius, which expands material options to ASA, polyamide, and polycarbonate. Early bird pricing on Kickstarter started at roughly $1,299 for the Essential and $1,599 for the Advanced, excluding shipping. Those prices undercut most competing tool-changing systems, though backers still have to wait for delivery.

Why the tool-changer matters

The main advantage over single-nozzle multi-color systems like Bambu Lab's AMS is waste. With the AMS, every color change involves retraction, purging, and a spent length of filament. The M1D swaps the entire head, so you get a clean nozzle already loaded with the next material. That approach makes water-soluble PVA supports practical without the usual purge penalty, and it opens up multi-material prints that mix flexible TPU with rigid PLA in the same job.

The fixed extruder also prints continuously while the other heads cycle in and out. That means one part of the model can be laying down plastic while a different color is being prepared. It is a genuine productivity gain, not just a convenience feature.

The open-source angle

Sovol has built the M1D to be modifiable. The tool-changer mechanism, firmware, and slicer profiles are all open, which means the community can develop third-party heads or alternative nozzle sizes. If you have ever wanted to run a dedicated abrasive nozzle for carbon fiber on one head and a polished brass nozzle for PLA on another, the M1D architecture makes that straightforward.

The bottom line

The Kickstarter money shows there is real demand for a desktop tool changer that does not cost as much as a used car. The livestream unboxing gave backers a chance to see fit and finish before November deliveries arrive. If Sovol can ship on time and keep quality consistent, the M1D will be the printer to beat in the multicolor desktop segment through the end of the year.
