California, New York, and Washington are pushing laws that would require 3D printers to screen files for gun parts. The technology to do that reliably does not exist yet.

Lawmakers in California, New York, and Washington want 3D printers to refuse files that could produce a firearm or a prohibited component before a single layer is laid down. The goal is clear. The path to actually doing it reliably is not.

California's AB 2047, included in the state's 2026 enacted budget, is the clearest example of what lawmakers are trying to legislate. The bill would require 3D printers sold or transferred in California to include what it calls firearm-blocking technology. Manufacturers would eventually have to certify compliance. Before a printer started a job, the file would have to be evaluated to determine whether it could produce a prohibited part.

The California Department of Justice would set the actual performance standards later, with a deadline of March 1, 2028. The legislation can require a result. The standard that determines whether manufacturers have achieved it does not exist yet.

The bill does acknowledge the system will not be perfect. Future standards would permit some false positives and false negatives, and regulators could consult technical experts when deciding how much error is acceptable. The detection system would also need updates as firearm designs changed or new ones appeared. That admission is realistic. It also makes the phrase "acceptable false positives" feel less abstract when the file being refused is your own.

The core problem is that a printer does not always see the original design file. Slicing software decomposes a 3D model into layer-by-layer G-code before the printer ever sees it. A file that produces a recognizable object in one orientation might produce something entirely different when rotated, scaled, or hollowed out. Detecting a gun part at the slicer level is not the same problem as detecting one at the printer level, and neither problem has a proven solution.

Open-source slicer communities and hardware firmware projects would face compliance costs that closed commercial manufacturers might absorb more easily. That could reshape the desktop 3D printing ecosystem in ways the bills do not address.

For printer owners, the practical impact depends on whether these laws survive legal challenge and how the underlying technical standards eventually get written. For now, the technology the bills depend on is still a research question, not a product feature.
