When Policy Meets the Printer
For years, the promise of distributed additive manufacturing — printing spare parts wherever they're needed instead of shipping them from a central warehouse — has lived mostly on slides and strategy docs. At AM Village 2026, the US-German software company 3YOURMIND tried to prove it actually works under real conditions, and the results are hard to dismiss.
What AM Village 2026 Was
AM Village is a highly specialized multinational capability workshop organized by the European Defence Agency (EDA) under its "AM for Logistic Support" project. Now in its third iteration after successful exercises in 2023 and 2024, the 2026 workshop was hosted by the Spanish Air Force in March at the Albacete-Los Llanos Air Base. This year carried a milestone: NATO was formally invited to participate for the first time, turning the 2023 EU-NATO Joint Declaration into hands-on, theater-level interoperability.
Over five days, more than 160 private industry companies attended. 3YOURMIND deployed a local network of servers, workstations, and routers to interface with nine different industrial 3D printers — including EOS, Ultimaker, and French OEM Cosmyx machines — spread across the military base.
Three Breakthroughs That Weren't Theoretical
The exercise produced three case studies that move distributed AM from concept to demonstrated capability:
- NATO RAPID-e interoperability: A "Dutch micro-factory" requested the Technical Data Package (TDP) for a cable clip assembly through NATO's RAPID-e digital repository. Finland's defense firm Patria confirmed the request, the TDP was transferred via 3YOURMIND, and the part was printed in the Netherlands on an Ultimaker S8 — a live cross-border supply chain in minutes.
- Shipboard printing: Working with the Royal Dutch Navy, the team printed parts remotely using printers from three different brands (Ultimaker, EOS, and Cosmyx), showing mixed-fleet interoperability at sea.
- Recipes from a central repository: Part data was pushed from a Center of Excellence to multiple end-users, including a NATO-aligned nonmember nation, validating sovereign manufacturing beyond alliance core members.
The Real Bottleneck Isn't the Hardware
The exercise also surfaced an uncomfortable truth: the challenge of scaling distributed AM now has less to do with printer performance and more to do with cybersecurity and network connectivity. The machines are ready; the secure digital backbone around them is the gating factor. Interestingly, 3YOURMIND argues that ground-up AI adoption could provide exactly the cybersecurity foundation distributed manufacturing needs — a synergy that could accelerate both.
What's Next
3YOURMIND is already wrapping up additional military exercises, including NATO's CWIX and the massive RIMPAC 2026 drill in Hawaii, with the focus shifting toward scaling these workflows across dozens of global production sites. The takeaway from AM Village is clear: allied decentralized manufacturing has gone from "unthinkable" in cybersecurity terms to "how much risk are we willing to take" — and NATO appears to be signaling the reward justifies it.
