A failed print costs more than time. These five rookie mistakes burn through filament, money, and patience, and every one of them is avoidable.
Filament is cheap until you waste a spool
Basic PLA is not expensive, but a string of failed prints adds up fast. Most of that waste comes from a short list of beginner mistakes. Fix these habits early and you will save rolls of filament, real money, and a lot of frustration.
1. Letting the spool unravel into spaghetti
This is the classic Reddit photo: a dropped spool turned into a tangle on the floor. The fix is boring but effective. When you dry a spool in a rotating dryer, tuck the filament end into the holes on the spool. Use clip style holders that let the spool spin freely, and keep them on whenever you store filament. Watch the center collar too. Many spools unscrew there so you can reload them with refill packs, and a loose collar is an invitation to disaster.
If a spool does explode into a mess, you can recover it with a respooler, but the process is slow and tedious. Prevention beats rescue every time.
2. Printing wet filament
Moisture in filament causes stringing, weak layer adhesion, ugly surfaces, and outright print failures. Dry your spools before use, even plain PLA, and treat PETG, ABS, and ASA as non negotiable drying jobs. You paid extra for those engineering filaments, so spending a few hours in a dryer overnight is a small price to keep the print clean.
3. Drying at the wrong temperature
Every plastic has a glass transition temperature, the point where it starts to deform. For PLA that sits around 65C, which is why you dry it near 45C: hot enough to drive out water, cool enough to avoid melting the roll. Push PLA to 60C or higher and you can fuse the entire spool into one solid brick. Dryer hot spots make even 50 or 55C risky, so stay conservative and check your spool mid cycle.
4. Using PLA spools for high temperature filaments
Refill packs are cheaper, but they need a spool, and the cheapest spools are made from PLA. That is fine if you are drying PLA on a PLA spool. It is a problem if you load PETG or ABS, which need higher drying temps. The PLA spool deforms, fuses to your fresh filament, and either ruins the roll or lets it unwind across the floor. For anything hotter than PLA, print or buy a spool that can take the heat.
5. Repeating the same failed print
A print fails for a reason: wet filament, a greasy bed, a bad slicer setting, a clogged nozzle, or a broken model file. Hitting print again with no change and hoping for luck is the most expensive habit on this list. Diagnose first. Wipe the bed, check the filament, look at the slicer, and only then send the job again. A five minute check beats throwing away another half spool.
The habit that ties it together
None of these fixes cost much. A few clips, a dryer, and a calm look at what went wrong will keep most of your filament on the spool and most of your prints on the bed. Treat every failure as data, not bad luck, and the savings show up within a week.
