The Indiana competition offers non-dilutive funding plus access to ACMI's National Security Industrial Hub and its EOS metal printers.

The American Center for Manufacturing and Innovation is betting that the hardest part of building a hardware startup is not the idea. It is finding a factory. ACMI's new Horizon Manufacturing Cup will award $3 million to five startups, including a $1 million grand prize, while giving winners access to the industrial campus it is building in Indiana.

The one-day pitch competition takes place on October 20, 2026, at Indiana University's Bloomington campus. Startups, spin-offs, and young technology companies working on hardware, materials, or manufacturing processes can apply through ACMI's website. Winners receive non-dilutive funding and introductions to venture capital firms.

What makes the cup relevant to 3D printing is ACMI's existing additive manufacturing footprint. In January, ACMI partnered with EOS and acquired metal systems including the EOS M4 ONYX and the AMCM M 8K, the first of its kind worldwide. The M 8K is built for large defense and aerospace parts such as rocket chambers and fuel tanks. Winning startups will be able to use that infrastructure at ACMI's National Security Industrial Hub, which spans more than 1,500 acres and hosts tenants including Prometheus Energetics, SPINNER North America, and iRocket.

Senator Jim Banks framed the competition as a defense initiative. The Horizon Manufacturing Cup will further solidify Indiana's role as the heart of America's defense industrial base, he said. It will help identify manufacturing startups vital to designing, building, and scaling the technologies our warfighters need. Senator Todd Young added that the goal is to bridge the gap between a working prototype and real production.

The model is not new, but it is spreading. ACMI's federal arm previously helped secure a $2 million defense contract for Supernova to 3D print energetic materials. The Air Force's AFWERX program awarded Solideon $1.25 million to build a deployable additive manufacturing cell for front-line use. In each case, non-dilutive government funding is paired with access to equipment and production space so startups do not stall between prototype and scale.

For 3D printing companies, the Horizon Cup is a practical on-ramp. Moving from a benchtop prototype to a production part requires process qualification, material approvals, quality systems, and machine capacity. Most startups lack all four. ACMI is offering the facilities and the funding in one place.

Applications are open ahead of the October 20 event. Whether the winners are metal printer developers, materials firms, or automation companies, the competition reflects a wider trend: defense agencies and industrial hubs are treating additive manufacturing as critical infrastructure worth funding directly.
