Aconity3D releases new multi-material welding head for its AconityWIRE directed energy deposition platform, enabling industrial-scale multi-material metal printing.
Multi-Material WireDED Reaches Industrial Maturity
Aconity3D has released a multi-material welding head for its AconityWIRE directed energy deposition (DED) platform. This development marks a significant step in the transition of multi-material wire-based 3D printing from research to industrial applications.
The new welding head enables manufacturers to switch between different materials during a single build, opening possibilities for functionally graded materials and component optimization. This is particularly valuable for aerospace and tooling applications where different material properties are needed in different zones of a single part.
Industry Transition to Production
Aconity3D sees the multi-material welding head as evidence that this technology is increasingly making the transition from research to industrial applications. A public demonstration is planned for May 19, 2026, at the companys first in-house exhibition (AconityXPERIENCE) at their headquarters in Herzogenrath, Germany.
The announcement follows the companys continued expansion of their portfolio, which includes open systems in polymer LPBF, metal LPBF, and WireDED. Many universities and researchers use Aconity systems to develop new processes and test exotic materials.
