German startup act'ble has developed a modular 3D-printed pointe shoe that replaces the disposable design dancers have relied on for centuries.
Professional ballet dancers burn through pointe shoes the way casual runners burn through sneakers: quickly, and often at great expense. New York City Ballet alone goes through roughly 7,000 pairs a year and spends close to $1 million doing it. The shoes mostly end up in landfill because recycling them is not practical. German startup act'ble thinks additive manufacturing can change that equation.
A modular approach to a centuries-old design
Pointe shoes have not changed much since the 19th century. Makers layer fabric, paper, glue and satin around a shaped last to build a rigid toe box. The process is mostly manual. Dancers break in every pair, pad and modify it, and often replace it after a single performance. Chronic foot pain and injury are accepted as part of the job.
act'ble's design replaces the whole-shoe model with something closer to a modular system. The shoe has three components: a 3D-printed TPU sole, a knitted skin, and load-bearing laces. The sole is the interesting part. Incisions cut it into segments that bend while the foot is flat, then lock together as the dancer rises onto pointe. That transition is where traditional shoes fail. In standard pairs, physiological walking is not possible, and the shank softens after hours of pressure.
The knitted skin pulls on like a sock. Its compression spreads pressure across the foot instead of cramming it all into the toes. The laces do more than fasten. They click into the sole and wrap around the foot, holding it up so the weight distributes more evenly. Three lace widths let dancers tune the fit to their skill level and arch shape.
From thesis prototype to production
Founder Sophia Lindner trained as a ballet dancer for 14 years before studying design. She built the first act'ble prototype for her bachelor's thesis in 2018 and called it React. It was never meant to be a product, but dancers, choreographers and dance medicine specialists who tried it thought otherwise. That pushed her into more than a hundred design iterations, with a new 3D-printed prototype coming off the machine every couple of days.
Manufacturing has changed since those early tests. The soles were laser sintered in 2022. Today production runs on HP Multi Jet Fusion at Something Added, a Barcelona additive manufacturing specialist. The move to mass production means act'ble can scale beyond small batches.
The company claims its shoes last five times longer than traditional pairs. If that holds up in real-world use, the impact on dance budgets and shoe waste would be substantial. The modular design also means dancers replace only the section that wears out first, whether that is the sole, the skin or the laces. That is a practical improvement over throwing away a whole shoe because one component gave out.
Traditional pointe shoes are essentially disposable items built on 19th-century techniques. act'ble's approach is not just clever. It is overdue.
