From Waste Stream to Wall

Most corporate offices hide their sustainability story behind a plaque. E.ON's new House of New Energy in Berlin puts it on the walls instead. The energy company commissioned Amsterdam-based Aectual to 3D-print a full wall panel system for its public exhibition space inside the historic Tacheles art center. The panels are made from recycled consumer plastic, dyed grey to match E.ON's branding, and shaped into a repeating pattern based on the dot in the company logo.

Aectual has built a reputation on exactly this kind of work. The firm has produced 3D-printed facades and interiors for Tiffany & Co., Hermès, and Hugo Boss. Its pitch is circular: it uses recycled waste streams and plant-based materials, then takes the prints back at end of life and shreds them into feedstock for the next job. Commercial interiors are typically torn out every five to seven years, so designing for reuse is not a nice extra. It is the point.

How the Panels Were Made

The wall system was designed around the E.ON dot, blown up into a three-dimensional honeycomb-like form that repeats across straight and curved panels. Aectual printed the pieces on its large-format machines, then assembled them on site to create a continuous textured surface. The pattern is meant to evoke networks, cables, and flowing energy systems. That is a lot of symbolism for a wall, but the geometry itself is practical: it gives visual depth without heavy material use, and the panels can be unbolted and remixed later.

Because the material is dyed rather than painted, scratches will not expose a different color underneath. That matters in a public space that is open six days a week. The House of New Energy is free to visit, so durability is not an abstract concern.

Why This Matters

Large-format 3D printing for interiors often gets filed under experimental. Aectual's growing list of retail and corporate clients suggests it is becoming a real option for bespoke architectural finishes. The E.ON installation is not a one-off art piece. It is a branded, functional interior that happens to be printable, reusable, and made from waste plastic.

E.ON is using the space to explain electrification, digitization, and flexible energy systems to the public. Having walls that literally embody circular manufacturing makes the message harder to ignore. Visitors can walk in, see the texture, and read the story without a brochure.
