Additive manufacturing still moves slower than it should in defense circles. The bottleneck is not printer capability. America Makes, the Department of Defense's manufacturing innovation institute, is trying to fix that with a new project call called Delta Qual 2.0.

The Scope of the Problem

Right now, getting a metal 3D-printed part qualified for a military platform can take years. Every alloy, every printer model, every build orientation, and every post-processing step needs documentation, testing, and sign-off. That is not surprising for safety-critical hardware, but it creates a wall that keeps most additive manufacturing out of production programs.

The Defense Department knows this is a problem. Without faster qualification, the military cannot take advantage of the lead-time and supply-chain benefits that 3D printing offers. That is why Delta Qual 2.0 exists: to fund teams that can build repeatable, data-backed qualification workflows.

Who Won the Funding

The winning teams include names that span the AM ecosystem. Lockheed Martin, Boeing, Northrop Grumman, and L3Harris are all involved. So are material and software specialists: ATI Materials, Colibrium Additive, EOS North America, Dyndrite, Trusted Metal, Velo3D, and The Barnes Global Advisors. Auburn University is contributing research depth, and NIST is there to help standardize the data formats.

The $9 million total is split across multiple projects. Some focus on specific materials, like titanium alloys for structural parts. Others target process controls: using sensor data during printing to predict part quality before it ever leaves the build chamber. A few are working on digital thread infrastructure, making sure qualification data flows from design through production without getting lost in file conversions.

Why It Matters for the Industry

Defense qualification standards often trickle down to commercial aerospace, medical devices, and automotive. If Delta Qual 2.0 produces faster, cheaper qualification paths for military parts, those same workflows will show up in civilian programs within a few years.

The broader signal here is that additive manufacturing is past the experimental phase in defense. The argument now is not whether metal 3D printing works. It is how fast the paperwork and testing can keep up with the hardware. Projects like this aim to close that gap.
