A Resin Printing Disaster Shows Why Peeling Forces and Flex Plates Matter
Resin printing looks magical until it is not. A recent Hackaday post by Maya Posch walks through a full SLA failure: a 16-slot CD rack that printed beautifully for a few layers, then ripped free from its supports and turned the print vat into a mess. The cleanup involved filtered resin, cured spills on a tile floor, and a serious mask. If you have ever resin printed, parts of this story will feel familiar.
The Peeling Force Problem
The root cause was something every resin printer owner knows but rarely calculates: peeling forces. Each time the build platform lifts after a layer cures, the freshly solidified resin clings to the FEP or nFEP film at the bottom of the vat. That tug has to break somewhere. If the support contact points are too small relative to the part's surface area, the part detaches from the supports instead of from the film.
That is exactly what happened with the CD rack. The model's large flat surface had far more grip on the vat film than the supports had on the model. On the first peel, the supports won and the print lost. In FDM printing, a failed print means spaghetti. In resin printing, it means fishing solid chunks out of toxic liquid while wearing gloves, eye protection, and a respirator.
Auto Supports Are a Starting Point, Not a Plan
Posch's earlier print, a batch of small figurines and LEGO-compatible parts, came out about 90 percent right using ChituBox's auto arrange, auto orient, and auto support tools. But the auto settings left support stubs in visible places and printed two figurines upside down, with their bases facing the build plate. Upside-down orientation is not always wrong, but it was clearly not the intended result. Manual inspection would have caught it.
The bigger lesson: auto-generated supports tend to overcompensate. They put more contact points than needed in easy places and too few where load is concentrated. For a wide, flat object like a CD rack, the default supports were never going to hold.
Build Plates Still Suck
Another frustration in the article is the solid metal build plate. Once a print does stick, you have to pry it off with a metal scraper. Posch notes that an older LD-002R printer with a magnetic flex plate made removal simple: flex the plate and the part pops off. Many current SLA printers still ship with rigid build plates, which is a strange regression for a technology that claims to be consumer friendly.
Flexible build plates are not a luxury for resin printing. They reduce part damage, reduce the risk of scratching the build surface, and make post-print handling faster. If your printer does not have one, it is worth the upgrade.
The Cleanup Procedure
After the failure, Posch drained the vat through a filter, cured the failed chunks with a handheld UV lamp, and used IPA to soften leftover resin on the FEP film. A silicone scraper helped lift cured resin without tearing the film. The article also notes a useful detail: cured resin does not bond well to tile flooring, so spills can be peeled up after UV exposure. Silicone mats underneath the printer would have made the whole thing easier.
One unexpected culprit was the resin auto-feed system, which had created a partial vacuum inside the bottle and deformed it. When Posch poured filtered resin back in, the bottle overflowed onto the floor. It is a good reminder that resin printer accessories, not just the print settings, can cause failures.
Practical Takeaways
If you are printing large, flat parts in resin, orient them so the cross-section per layer is small and the peel forces stay manageable. Use heavier supports than auto settings suggest, and place them manually under load-bearing surfaces. Inspect the preview before you print. And if you are still scraping parts off a metal build plate, order a flex plate before your next print.
SLA can produce detail that FDM cannot touch. But the trade-off is a process that punishes carelessness quickly and messily. This disaster is a good reminder that the slicer preview is not optional.
