Anycubic is trying to make multicolor 3D printing feel less like a luxury add-on and more like a standard feature. The new Kobra X, priced at $279, is the company's attempt to put a native four-color printing system inside a budget desktop machine. The printer uses Anycubic's ACE GEN2 multicolor hardware, which the company says doubles color-change speed and cuts purge waste by 40 to 50 percent compared to earlier systems.

The price is the main story here. Native multicolor printing has mostly lived in the $400 to $800 range, bundled with premium CoreXY machines or sold as an expensive add-on module. The Kobra X undercuts that entry point by a wide margin, although the real cost of multicolor printing still depends on how much purge plastic you are willing to waste and whether you plan to expand beyond four colors.

How the ACE GEN2 System Works

The Kobra X uses a single extruder with a four-filament input path. The ACE GEN2 system handles material switching internally, which means you do not need a separate multi-material unit bolted to the side of the printer. Anycubic says the design supports mixed hard-and-soft material printing, so you can combine PLA with TPU in the same job without manual tool changes.

Demo models, decorative pieces, labels, and color-coded functional parts are the obvious fits, because those are the jobs where color switching matters more than absolute precision. Beginners who want to experiment with multicolor printing without a large upfront investment will also find the entry price attractive.

The trade-offs are real. The software workflow is not polished, the documentation is thin, and the purge behavior is messy. If you want a friction-free multicolor experience, you should probably spend more on a machine with a more mature ecosystem. If you want the lowest possible price of admission and are willing to tolerate some rough edges, the Kobra X is worth considering.
