The service is aimed at programs that depend on legacy components no longer supported by their original patterns or suppliers.

The Tooling Problem in Defense Manufacturing

Sand casting has always depended on physical patterns and multi-piece core assemblies. When those patterns disappear, either because the original supplier went out of business or because the part was produced decades ago and nobody kept the tooling, the casting option evaporates. That is a serious issue for defense and aerospace programs that need to keep old equipment running.

Arc Impact's service removes that dependency. Instead of machining a new pattern or hunting down a surviving original, engineers send the part geometry to Arc Impact. The company 3D prints the sand mold and core directly from the digital file, runs casting simulation to validate fill and solidification, then pours the metal. The result is a production-ready metal part with no physical tooling involved at any step.

How It Fits the Current Landscape

Arc Impact is not the first company to connect 3D printing with sand casting. ExOne's Sand 3D Printing Network offered a broadly similar binder jetting approach aimed at aerospace and automotive customers, partly framed around reshoring parts that became hard to source during supply disruptions. That network has since wound down, and Arc Impact is filling the gap with a service specifically targeted at defense obsolescence programs.

The difference is focus. Where ExOne served general manufacturing, Arc Impact is positioning itself as a domestic on-demand casting house for defense and government contracts. The messaging around supply continuity for legacy parts maps directly onto current US and NATO efforts to reduce dependence on foreign-forged or cast components for military hardware.

Why Defense Cares Right Now

Defense manufacturers are under pressure to restore idle equipment, reproduce obsolete spare parts, and shorten qualification cycles. Digital casting addresses all three. Sand molds printed from digital files can be produced in days, simulation reduces the risk of casting defects before a single pour happens, and the resulting metal parts meet the same specifications as conventionally tooled castings.

Arc Impact's launch comes at a moment when additive manufacturing is being treated as a resilience tool, not just a prototyping one.
