Backflip's new AI foundation model turns 3D scans and STL files into fully parametric CAD in minutes, with an Autodesk Fusion add-in available now.
Backflip AI has launched an AI copilot for CAD that converts 3D scans, STL files, and mesh data into fully editable, parametric CAD models. The tool is available now as an Autodesk Fusion add-in and as a standalone web application. The company estimates that reverse-engineering a physical part into usable CAD normally costs around $1,500 and takes hours of skilled work. Backflip says its system can do the same job in minutes for as little as $10.
How it works
The system is built on a second-generation foundation model trained specifically for 3D geometry. Rather than treating 3D comprehension as a side effect of general-purpose training, Backflip built the model around CAD operations such as extruding, revolving, and patterning. The result is a tool that reconstructs meshes, checks its own work, and iterates to improve dimensional accuracy. Output models include a full feature tree that follows standard engineering conventions, so they can be opened directly in Fusion and edited without rebuilding from scratch.
Kairo Morton, Founding Engineer at Backflip, explained that most frontier models have limited 3D comprehension that emerges from training on internet data. Backflip's model treats 3D CAD operations as a first-class primitive and trains to design the way engineers actually do: breaking down bulk geometry and rebuilding it feature by feature.
Current limits and roadmap
The copilot performs best on moderate-complexity 3-axis CNC milled and turned parts, according to Backflip. The company is also targeting 3D printing and other manufacturing methods, though those use cases are less proven at launch. Early customers already include a top automotive manufacturer. Plugins for additional CAD packages are in development and expected later this year.
The practical impact for 3D printing users is worth watching. If the tool can reliably convert a scanned physical part into an editable model, it removes one of the biggest bottlenecks in part replication and modification. Hobbyists and small workshops that could not afford a dedicated CAD engineer may find themselves able to reverse-engineer broken brackets, vintage machine parts, or custom fittings directly from a 3D scan.
