After a year of testing both systems, the gap between Bambu's AMS and Prusa's MMU3 is smaller than ever, but one is still the better choice for most buyers.
The Two Systems That Define Consumer Multicolor Printing
If you want more than one color or material on a single print in 2026, you are choosing between two systems. Bambu Lab's Automatic Material System, or AMS, feeds filament through a single hotend using an automated switching mechanism. Prusa's Multi Material Unit 3, or MMU3, does the same thing with a different mechanical design. Both work. Both have tradeoffs. Neither is perfect.
The AMS sits beside the printer and holds four spools in a humidity-controlled bay. It retracts the current filament, loads the next one, and purges the transition into a waste tower. The MMU3 sits on top of the printer and handles five filaments with a selector mechanism and a built-in cutter. PrusaSlicer manages the multi-color slicing for the MMU3, while Bambu Studio handles the AMS.
Reliability: AMS Edges Ahead
Community data and long-term testing show the AMS has a slight reliability edge. Swap success rates for the AMS 2 Pro hover around 97 percent with properly dried filament. The MMU3 has improved dramatically from its unreliable predecessors, but success rates still vary more widely, typically between 85 and 97 percent depending on filament brand and calibration.
The MMU3's most common failure mode is a mushroomed filament tip that jams during loading. Certain PETG brands are prone to this. The AMS fails more often on tangled spools or worn PTFE in the buffer unit. Both systems recover from most failures by pausing and asking for intervention, but a failed swap can still ruin a long print.
Waste and Cost: MMU3 Uses Less Filament
The MMU3 consistently generates less purge waste than the AMS. On a four-color print, the MMU3 might waste 25 to 40 percent of the model weight in purge material, while the AMS can hit 40 to 60 percent on the same design. The gap comes down to purge tuning. PrusaSlicer defaults to more aggressive purge optimization. Bambu Studio plays it safe to avoid color bleed, which costs more filament.
Over a year of heavy multi-color printing, that difference adds up to real money. At 200 prints per year, the AMS might cost eighty dollars in wasted filament. The MMU3 might cost sixty-five. Not a huge gap, but it is measurable.
Color Count and Expandability
The MMU3 supports five filaments out of the box. The AMS supports four. That extra slot matters if you want four colors plus soluble PVA supports, or if your design simply needs five distinct colors.
Bambu wins on scalability, though. You can chain up to four AMS units to one printer for sixteen simultaneous colors. No consumer system matches that. The MMU3 is capped at five with no expansion path. If your goal is maximum color count, Bambu is the only answer.
Which System Fits Your Setup
Buy the AMS if you want the simplest path from idea to finished print. Setup takes under an hour, slicer integration is polished, and the community has years of documented solutions. The A1 Combo at around four hundred dollars is the cheapest reliable entry point into multicolor printing available right now.
Buy the MMU3 if you are already on Prusa hardware, care about open-source firmware, and want to minimize waste. The kit costs around three hundred dollars. Expect a few hours of calibration. Once tuned, it rewards you with lower filament costs and the ability to run five colors including a dedicated soluble support slot.
Neither system is universally better. The AMS frustrates less out of the box. The MMU3 rewards tinkering with lower waste and more colors. Match the system to your workflow and you will avoid most of the regret that comes from choosing based on marketing alone.
