Bambu Lab Is Building a Standalone Laser

Bambu Lab has spent the past two years integrating laser engraving and cutting into its multi-function H2D printer. The H2D combines 3D printing, laser work, and pen plotting in one machine. Now the company is teasing a product that splits the laser into its own dedicated device. The R1 will be Bambu Lab's first standalone laser cutter and engraver, arriving in September 2026.

The teaser site uses the phrase "a new ray of making" and promises full details later this month. Pre-orders are expected to open in September. Bambu Lab says the R1 applies the same design philosophy behind its 3D printers to laser work: minimal setup, maximum output.

Why a Separate Laser Makes Sense

The H2D proved there is demand for combined 3D printing and laser work. But keeping both functions in one machine means tradeoffs. The print volume and laser workspace share the same gantry. Changing between a 3D print and a laser job requires swapping toolheads and adjusting safety protocols. A standalone laser removes those constraints.

Users who only need cutting and engraving can buy a smaller, cheaper machine. Users who already own a Bambu Lab 3D printer can add the R1 without paying for a second full 3D printing platform. And Bambu Lab can optimize the R1's enclosure, ventilation, and safety systems specifically for laser operations rather than designing compromises that serve both functions.

What We Know So Far

Bambu Lab has not released specifications for the R1. The working area, laser power, camera system, and exhaust requirements are all still unknown. Pricing has not been announced. The company is collecting email addresses on its teaser page for a launch notification.

The H2D offers a clue about what to expect. That machine uses a 10W or 40W 455nm diode laser, depending on configuration. Bambu Lab's software already supports laser workflows through Bambu Suite, including AI camera alignment for cutting graphics. The R1 will likely inherit that software stack and expand it for dedicated laser use.

The Competitive Landscape

The desktop laser market has matured rapidly since 2023. xTool dominates the mid-range with its P2 and P3 CO2 lasers. Creality and Atomstack sell budget diode lasers under $500. Higher-end machines from Trotec and Glowforge target small businesses. Bambu Lab's entry is significant because the company already has a massive installed base of 3D printers, a strong software ecosystem, and a reputation for making advanced tools accessible.

Bottom Line

Bambu Lab is turning the laser from an accessory into a product. The R1 won't be the first standalone laser from a 3D printer company, but it will be the first from a brand that has already convinced millions of users that automated, app-controlled fabrication is worth paying for. If the R1 ships at a competitive price with the same ease of use as the H2D, it could reshape the desktop laser market the same way the H2D reshaped expectations for multi-function machines.
