A maker known as Berm Peak used TPU filament and multiple design iterations to build a functional airless tire for extreme off-road use.
Airless tires have been a dream for decades. Michelin and others have teased versions that use flexible polymer meshes instead of air. Most of those concepts stay in the showroom or on concept cars. Berm Peak, a YouTube creator, decided to see if a 3D printer could build something closer to a real-world solution.
His target was not a car tire. It was a mountain bike tire. That is actually a harder problem. Mountain bikes take serious abuse on rough terrain. Punctures and flats are common enough that serious riders spend good money on sealant, inserts, and reinforced rubber. An airless alternative has to match that durability.

After a few design iterations, Berm Peak settled on a TPU-based tire. The material choice matters. TPU flexes without tearing. It absorbs impact. But printing a full tire in one piece proved impractical. Instead, he printed sections and joined them on the rim using a separate 3D printed interface. The tread sits on an S-shaped compliant spacing that lets the tire compress without losing shape.
The result is not going to replace Maxxis or Schwalbe anytime soon. It does, however, mostly hold up to his extreme off-road testing. That is an impressive result for something built in a home shop.
The Market Already Solved This
Here is the twist. The cycling world already has answers for flats. Tubeless setups with sealant have become standard. Foam inserts are common. Riders who want puncture resistance do not actually need airless tires. That is why Berm Peak built something to turn heads on the trail, not to start a tire company.
The neon-green airless tire is still a fun project. It shows what is possible when a maker has the time, the printer, and no deadline. For the rest of us, the lesson is simpler: 3D printing works best when it solves problems that do not already have cheaper answers.
