Italian industrial 3D printing specialist Caracol is opening a dedicated large-format hub in Milan, teaming up with Designtech and LAMÁQUINA.

Caracol has announced a partnership with Milan-based design and fabrication firms Designtech and LAMÁQUINA to establish a full-scale large-format additive manufacturing hub in Italy. The facility will combine Caracol's proprietary robotic extrusion systems with local design expertise, targeting architecture, product design, and industrial clients who need parts larger than standard desktop or even mid-size printers can deliver.
The location in Milan is deliberate. Northern Italy remains one of Europe's densest clusters for design-driven manufacturing, with strong links to furniture, automotive, and architectural sectors that increasingly specify large-format 3D printed components for end-use applications.
Why Large-Format Matters Now
Large-format additive manufacturing has crossed a threshold in the last two years. What used to be a niche reserved for research labs or bespoke art installations is now showing up in construction mock-ups, boat hull sections, furniture shells, and even aircraft cabin components. Several factors converged to make that shift possible: stronger certified materials, faster deposition rates, and better software tools that handle the geometry complexity of big parts without choking on file size.
Caracol's system sits at the robotic end of that spectrum, using gantry-mounted extruders rather than a conventional fixed-frame printer bed. That architecture removes most size constraints and opens up the possibility of printing directly on factory floors rather than inside climate-controlled chambers.

Designtech brings architectural and product design capability to the collaboration. LAMÁQUINA contributes Spanish manufacturing know-how and an existing client base in Southern Europe. Together the three companies plan to offer a vertically integrated service: clients submit digital designs, the hub produces large-scale parts, and post-processing plus finishing happens on-site.
That bundled approach matters because large-format 3D printed parts still demand significant cleanup, support removal, and surface treatment. Separating production from finishing has been a consistent bottleneck in the market. Bringing both steps under one roof is the kind of operational detail that actually moves the technology from pilot to regular production.

Italy's additive manufacturing sector has grown steadily without the headline-grabbing mergers or billion-dollar investments that dominate US coverage. The country's strength is in applied design and production engineering rather than raw hardware scale. A hub like this fits that profile directly: it is less about selling printers and more about selling completed parts to industries that already trust Italian fabrication quality.
What to Watch
The Milan hub is expected to begin accepting client orders later in 2026. Caracol has not disclosed investment figures, but comparable robotic additive facilities typically run into the low tens of millions when you factor in hardware, facility fit-out, and staffing. The real test will be whether the hub can hit consistent throughput and material certification standards that aerospace and automotive customers require.
