Carbon DB 4000: The Numbers Behind the Name
Carbon is selling a denture base resin called DB 4000. The name is not marketing fluff. It refers to the material's reported work of fracture: 4,000 J/m², tested in water at 37 degrees Celsius under modified ISO 20795-1 conditions. Carbon claims that number is 31% higher than the published results of the most-used denture base resin on its printers.
The resin is FDA-cleared and compliant with ISO 20795-1. It prints on Carbon's M-Series DLS printers using a single-cure workflow, which means labs do not need to add post-processing steps or extra materials to get a finished denture base. Four gingiva shades are available: Light Pink, Original Pink, Dark Reddish Pink, and Dark Meharry.
Carbon's internal validation reports 97% global accuracy within plus or minus 130 microns and 95% intaglio accuracy within plus or minus 100 microns. The company says these figures beat the category leader on its own platform. Whether that holds up in independent testing remains to be seen.
What This Means for Dental Labs
The denture market is a quiet but significant area for 3D printing. Most consumer coverage focuses on FDM printers and trinkets, yet digital dentures represent a steady, high-volume application where resin systems must meet strict biocompatibility and mechanical standards.
Carbon is not just selling resin here. It is selling a controlled workflow: Automatic Print Preparation software, validated print parameters, and a material locked to its hardware. That lock-in is standard in dental manufacturing, but it does mean labs must stay within Carbon's ecosystem to use DB 4000.
DB 4000 is available now in the United States. Pricing is $450 for a 900 mL package. Competitors like Formlabs and EnvisionTEC also offer denture base resins, so Carbon's claim of better economics will need to survive real-world lab comparisons.
