Adidas Project R.A.P. made its soccer debut on a 16-year-old phenom, and it could change how cleats are made.
A boot built around one athlete
On July 23, 2026, Philadelphia Union midfielder Cavan Sullivan stepped onto the pitch wearing something no professional footballer had worn before: a fully 3D-printed boot. The 16-year-old debuted Adidas' Project R.A.P., short for Radical Athlete Perception, during a 3-1 win over Red Bull New York.
The cleats are pink, a color Sullivan has worn throughout his breakout summer. But the real story is what is inside the upper. Adidas built the boot around Sullivan's exact foot data rather than starting from a standard last. That means the printed lattice structure matches his pressure points and movement patterns.
From basketball to football
Project R.A.P. actually launched with a basketball shoe, the BB.01, in a limited run of 169 pairs. That made its on-court debut at the NBA Summer League. The football boot is the platform's second product, and it is the first to appear in a top-level competitive match.
Adidas Senior Vice President of Innovation Design Alexander Taylor said the goal is straightforward: deliver a bespoke fit at speed. "We built Project: R.A.P. around a simple belief that athletes are capable of more, and the right technology can make it happen," he said.
Why this matters
Earlier 3D-printed footwear mostly modified an existing shoe design. Project R.A.P. runs the process in reverse. It starts with athlete data, then generates the geometry from there. That is a meaningful shift, and it is what separates this from earlier performance-focused 3D prints.
Sullivan has thrived in the boots since the debut. He led the Red Bulls match with six successful dribbles and created a chance. He has continued wearing them through wins over Atlanta United and a Leagues Cup appearance against Cruz Azul. He also has a goal and an assist in nine MLS matches this season.
The bigger picture
Other companies are chasing the same idea. German startup HEZO uses a smartphone app to capture roughly 1,000 data points per foot and prints cycling shoes to order. Actble and Something Added recently 3D-printed a pointe shoe with a replaceable inner sole. But Adidas is the first to put a fully 3D-printed performance boot on a professional football pitch in a match that counts.
Sullivan is set to join Manchester City once he turns 18. If the boot performs as well as his summer has, expect more athletes to ask for their own pair.
