A Lattice Built for the Pitch

Project R.A.P. uses a unique lattice structure inside the boot that adidas says is optimized for comfort and support. That is a different goal from traditional leather or knit uppers, which rely on stitching and glue to hold shape.

Adidas has not announced a consumer release date for the 3D-printed cleats. The company did launch a limited-run 3D-printed basketball shoe, the BB.01 Additive, on July 14 at $250 a pair. That gives a rough idea of where the technology sits: proven enough to sell, not yet ready for mass production.

Why 3D Printing Matters for Football Boots

Football boots have been stuck in a mostly incremental cycle for years. Lace setups, upper materials, and plate designs change, but the basic construction method stays the same. 3D printing lets adidas build internal structures that would be impossible to mold or stitch. The lattice midsole can be tuned for specific pressure points, and the whole upper can be printed as a single piece with no overlapping seams.

The bigger question is whether adidas can scale this without losing the fit and feel that professional players expect. Sullivan is only 16, and his feet will keep changing. A boot that is custom-printed for him today may need a new version next season.

What Comes Next

Adidas has not said when Project R.A.P. will reach consumers. The company's Made to Measure program, which costs 1,300 pounds, shows that adidas is already willing to charge a premium for custom footwear. A consumer version of the 3D-printed boot could land at a similar price, at least at first.

The debut itself is the real milestone. A 16-year-old in an MLS match wearing a boot that did not exist two years ago is a clear signal that additive manufacturing has moved from prototyping tool to performance product.
