Cheap interceptors change the drone warfare math
Chinese manufacturers are mass-producing 3D-printed interceptor drones priced between $1,500 and $2,900 each. The goal is to counter cheap kamikaze drones without firing expensive air-defense missiles.
Dozens of firms showcased new interceptor rockets at China's largest drone fair in Shenzhen this year. Many entered the sector only months ago. The systems physically strike incoming drones rather than using jamming or radio interference.
Speed and distributed production
AI improvements have boosted accuracy over the past year. Some interceptors now exceed 300 kmph. Companies quote prices of RMB 10,000 to 20,000 per unit, with unguided versions even cheaper.
Shenzhen Weichuan Model Equipment started developing interceptors in October and is already selling several thousand per month, including to Russia and Middle Eastern buyers such as the UAE.
Why 3D printing matters here
3D printing simplifies and shortens the design and prototyping stage. It also allows manufacturers to modify interceptors quickly as threats evolve. Distributed production across multiple locations and printing farms reduces supply-chain risk.
Terra Drone CEO Toru Tokushige put it plainly: 3D printing is not simply about reducing manufacturing costs. It has the potential to transform defense manufacturing into a faster, more flexible and more resilient production model.
