A Minnesota defense contractor co-located its 3D printed propellant lab with live-fire testing at a 53,000-acre National Guard base.
Print and test in the same loop
Chromatic 3D Materials is now running live rocket propellant test firings at Camp Ripley, a National Guard training facility near Little Falls, Minnesota. The company built an integrated lab there so it can move from design to print to actual firing without shipping hardware across the country.
The advantage is speed. Normally, a propellant team prints a grain, packs it, ships it to a test range, and waits days or weeks for a slot. At Camp Ripley, Chromatic says that loop is compressed. Developers can iterate on geometry, print the next version, and test it within the same day.

Chromatic 3D Materials specializes in additive manufacturing for defense propellants. It develops custom rocket motor grains and cases using established AM processes, then tests them for thrust, burn rate, and safety margins. Its customer base includes defense primes and government labs that want faster prototyping than traditional tooling allows.
What the facility includes
The new capability pairs a 3D printing lab with firing pads and instrumentation controlled by the Minnesota National Guard. The setup is meant to support rapid prototyping and immediate validation. A press release describing the launch said the collaboration includes OnRamp Hub: Minnesota, LEMA, and Camp Ripley itself.
Why it matters
Defense propulsion programs are under pressure to move faster. The traditional model of hand-packed propellant grains and months-long test cycles does not fit the pace modern engineering teams want. 3D printing already showed value in custom grain geometries that improve thrust profiles. Adding live-fire capability on site turns AM into a closed-loop tool, not just a pre-test step.
This is also part of a broader trend: additive manufacturing is moving beyond prototype parts into functional defense hardware that actually fires, flies, or detonates. Chromatic is betting that shortening the test loop will win more programs.
