Conflux bet a decade ago that metal 3D printing would crack aerospace heat exchangers. CEO Dan Woodford says the momentum is finally real.

A decade of betting on the hard problem

A decade ago, Conflux Technology was founded on a simple premise: heat exchangers might be one of the best uses for metal additive manufacturing. The Australian company did not try to print everything. It picked a single, stubborn challenge and spent years learning how to do it well.

The founders came from motorsport. Michael Fuller spent years in Formula One before launching Conflux in 2015, and he saw thermal management as the place where metal 3D printing offered a clear edge over traditional machining. Complex internal channels, large surface areas, and demanding cooling loads make heat exchangers a near perfect fit for the technology.

From intention to action

CEO Dan Woodford says the long wait is starting to pay off. The hype that surrounded additive manufacturing five or ten years ago has cooled into something more useful.

"The momentum that people talked about five or ten years ago is now actually there," Woodford told 3DPrint.com. "The intention is converting into action."

That shift shows up in how aerospace programs now treat the technology. Additive is being considered at the start of a design, not bolted on later as an experiment. Entire heat exchangers are increasingly built through additive manufacturing rather than assembled from many welded parts.

Certification is the new frontier

For Woodford, the bigger story is not any single project. It is the industry's growing focus on qualification.

"The conversation has shifted from whether additive can do the job to how we qualify it, how we certify it, and how we put it into service," he said.

That is where the real work now lives. Conflux has worked with aerospace customers since 2018 and holds AS9100D certification for its printed heat exchangers. Its public work includes programs with Airbus, Honeywell, and General Atomics, plus hydrogen aircraft efforts such as Airbus' zero-emission initiatives and the EU funded THEMEA4HERA thermal management program.

Why this matters for the rest of the industry

Conflux is a useful signal for where metal AM is headed. It shows a company can survive the trough between early promise and real deployment by staying narrow and ruthless about quality. The lesson for the broader market is that adoption does not arrive in a flood. It arrives when engineers stop asking if a part can be printed and start asking how to prove it will fly.

Aerospace was always going to be a slow convert. The rewards are enormous, but the bar for proof is higher than anywhere else. Conflux's bet looks less lonely than it did in 2015, and that is the clearest sign yet that the sector has moved past the hype.
