A joint white paper from Continuum Powders and AM Research makes a direct argument: metal additive manufacturing can only scale if the industry solves its feedstock supply problem, and recycling is no longer just a sustainability initiative. It is becoming a manufacturing necessity.

The paper, titled Metal AM at Scale: the Closed-Loop Materials Era, pulls AM Research market data to show that the total value of metal 3D-printed parts grew from just under $3 billion in 2016 to over $8 billion in 2025. That growth trajectory is impressive until you consider what feeds it. Every printed part made from virgin metal powder tightens the supply chain around a handful of specialized materials: nickel, titanium, copper, and the superalloys used in aerospace and energy applications. As production scales, those materials get more expensive and harder to source reliably.

Why recycling is now a cost story, not a green story

When metal AM was mainly used for prototyping, the economics of recycling powder did not matter much. Print volumes were low, and the cost penalty for throwing away used powder was negligible. That changed as powder bed fusion, directed energy deposition, and metal binder jetting moved into serial production. A shop printing hundreds of production parts per week generates meaningful amounts of degraded powder. At scale, recycling that material back into usable feedstock is not an environmental choice. It is how the shop stays cost competitive.

Continuum Powders was built around that premise. The Houston-based company operates a proprietary Greyhound Melt-to-Powder system that processes metal scrap back into AM-grade powder. In late 2024, the company worked with Siemens Energy to recycle roughly one ton of nickel superalloy scrap per week at a Houston facility. That partnership demonstrated that closed-loop recycling works at production scale, not just in pilot batches.

The infrastructure investment problem

The white paper connects the recycling discussion to a larger macro trend. Bloomberg Intelligence has projected that global infrastructure investment over the next decade could approach $20 trillion, driven by data center construction, power generation, and grid buildout. Those sectors need copper, nickel, and specialty alloys in quantities that current supply chains cannot easily deliver. Additive manufacturing is positioned as a solution because it uses material more efficiently than subtractive methods, but only if the powder itself comes from a secure, recycled source.

Continuum's recently introduced Custom Foundry Runtime (CFR) reflects that pressure. CFR enables flexible production runs of 50 kilograms to one ton per day for R&D and low-volume manufacturing. The system is aimed at smaller producers that need recycled powder but cannot justify a dedicated recycling line. By offering powder-as-a-service with batch sizes that match actual demand, Continuum is trying to make closed-loop material accessible beyond the largest industrial accounts.

Defense applications and policy tailwinds

The Department of Defense is also paying attention to closed-loop recycling. The US Navy's additive manufacturing industrial base program now includes large-scale recycling of defense hardware scrap as a central component. AM Research projects that the maritime metal parts market value for nickel alone will exceed $400 million by 2034, up from $31 million in 2025. That represents more than a tenfold increase in nine years, and the ships and submarines driving that demand will need domestic powder sources that do not depend on foreign supply chains.

The Fiscal Year 2026 National Defense Authorization Act adds another layer. By restricting foreign-sourced 3D printing systems for DoD programs, the policy makes domestic manufacturing capability a compliance requirement. Suppliers that can demonstrate secure, recycled, US-based feedstock will have a structural advantage in defense contracting.

The road ahead

Few companies currently operate at the scale needed to build a fully closed-loop metals ecosystem on their own. That is why partnerships like the one between Continuum and AM Research matter. The white paper is not just marketing material. It is a market map showing where demand is heading, which materials will be under pressure, and which recycling capabilities will become prerequisites for participation.

The short version: if you are buying or building a metal additive manufacturing operation, the powder question is now a strategy question. Closed-loop recycling has moved from a nice-to-have sustainability feature to a core manufacturing capability. Companies that treat it that way will have an easier time scaling. Those that do not will hit a supply wall sooner than they expect.
