A Peptide Printing Trial Under Way
PharmaTher Holdings has started evaluating Craft Health's CraftMake platform as a manufacturing route for peptide-based medicines. The Singapore-based printer uses paste extrusion at room temperature, which avoids the heat and UV exposure that typically degrade peptide molecules during conventional manufacturing.
The trial covers six target peptides. Before either company commits to a full commercial relationship, the teams will test formulations, dosage shapes, and release profiles to see whether CraftMake can produce repeatable, GMP-compliant output at the ±1% dosing accuracy Craft Health claims for its enclosed dual-head production system.
How CraftMake Works
CraftMake deposits semi-solid paste through pneumatic and mechanical print heads. No heating, no UV curing. That matters for peptides: many active compounds break down above moderate temperatures, and UV light can alter molecular structure. The printer can also build pill-in-pill geometries, layering different materials inside a single dose.
Around the hardware sit two software layers. CraftControl handles job scheduling, audit trails, and multi-printer coordination. CraftBlends stores formulation recipes for immediate-release, delayed-release, sustained-release, and orally disintegrating tablets. The combined stack is designed to sit inside a Section 503A compounding pharmacy, letting clinicians adjust doses on a per-patient basis rather than relying on fixed-dose commercial tablets.
Why Fixed-Dose Manufacturing Falls Short
Most peptide medicines today come in standard strengths. If a patient needs a different dose, the usual path is manual compounding, which is time-consuming and hard to validate consistently. PharmaTher's PatchPrint platform already targets this gap with microneedle delivery. The CraftMake trial extends that logic to oral peptides, where dose titration is even harder because absorption rates shift with food, metabolism, and other medications.
Dr. Wei Jiang Goh, Craft Health's co-founder and CEO, described the fit as direct. PharmaTher brings the peptide strategy and prescriber network; Craft Health brings the hardware, formulation science, and software stack. The current agreement is strictly an evaluation. Neither company has signed a manufacturing or supply contract.
What to Watch Next
If the peptide test run succeeds, the next step would be pilot printing inside compounding pharmacies. That path still requires regulatory sign-off, especially in the US where the FDA's Section 503A bulks list determines which ingredients compounding pharmacies can use without full new-drug applications.
The broader signal is that 3D printing is quietly moving past novelty applications in pharma. Paste extrusion platforms like CraftMake and similar efforts from companies such as Triastek and FabRx are building the technical and regulatory case for personalized oral doses. A successful peptide trial from a well-known partner like PharmaTher would add weight to that argument.
