Creality has officially launched the Filament Maker M1 and Shredder R1, a desktop recycling system that transforms 3D printing waste into fresh filament at up to 1kg per hour.
Creality has officially launched its much-anticipated filament recycling system, consisting of two devices: the Filament Maker M1 extruder and the Shredder R1 granulator. Together, they form a complete desktop solution for transforming failed 3D prints and plastic waste back into reusable 3D printing filament.
Closed-Loop 3D Printing
The system addresses one of the biggest pain points in desktop 3D printing: waste. Between failed prints, support structures, and test runs, even hobbyists can generate significant plastic waste. The M1 and R1 combo aims to close that loop by letting users extrude their own filament from recycled materials.
The Shredder R1 granulates plastic waste into small pellets, which are then fed into the Filament Maker M1 for extrusion into fresh 1.75mm or 2.85mm filament. According to early reports, the system can produce up to 1kg of filament per hour.
Why This Matters
This is Creality's first entry into the filament recycling space, positioning them alongside companies like:
- Filament Extruders — Previously only available from niche manufacturers
- Recycling Services — Like Prusa, which offers filament recycling
- Closed-Loop Systems — Like the recently reviewed extrusion technologies
For environmentally conscious makers and print farms, this could significantly reduce filament costs while minimizing plastic waste. Given Creality's market position as a volume leader in desktop 3D printing, this product could bring filament recycling mainstream.
What's Next
The Creality M1 and R1 system is expected to be available through Creality's official channels soon. Pricing and exact availability are still being confirmed, but the company has opened pre-orders for early adopters interested in sustainable 3D printing.
For makers looking to reduce their environmental footprint or simply save money on filament, this could be a game-changer when it hits the market.
