A new test compares desktop PC-ABS prints against a Stratasys Fortus 450mc, and the gap between home and factory is smaller than you think.

A YouTube maker named Igor at My Tech Fun ran a direct comparison between desktop PC-ABS prints and parts made on a Stratasys Fortus 450mc industrial FDM printer. The results should change how you think about home printing.

The Setup

Igor printed identical parts on a desktop printer using Polymaker PC-ABS filament and on the Stratasys system using its own material. The goal was simple: see where the quality gap actually shows up, and where it does not.

What the Test Found

The industrial printer won on accuracy. Layer lines were cleaner, and dimensional tolerances were tighter. That was expected. The surprise was how close the desktop prints came in strength and surface finish. For functional parts that do not sit next to each other in an assembly, the home print is often good enough.

Price is where the story flips. The desktop setup costs a few hundred dollars. The Stratasys system costs tens of thousands. For small runs, prototyping, or hobby projects, PC-ABS on a good desktop machine is a rational choice.

The Real Takeaway

Industrial FDM still earns its price tag in high-volume production and aerospace or automotive certification. But the old assumption that desktop PC-ABS is nowhere near industrial quality is no longer true. The gap has narrowed to the point where buyers should ask themselves whether they need factory precision or just a part that works.
