The Numbers Behind the Drone Boom

A new market report from Additive Manufacturing Research puts the current market for 3D printed drone components at $140 million in 2025. The firm projects that figure will climb to $900 million by 2034. That is a sixfold increase in nine years.

The driver is not consumer enthusiasm. It is defense budgets. Governments worldwide are racing to field drones and counter-drone systems. Conventional manufacturing needs months to stand up a production line. Additive manufacturing compresses that timeline to days or hours. When urgency is the constraint, 3D printing wins.

Why Drones Are Different

The report makes a specific claim that deserves attention: drones have become the number one application where low-cost 3D printers are producing production parts. That is a shift from prototyping to actual serial manufacturing.

The economics work because many tactical drones are designed to be expendable. A $400 FPV drone built by soldiers from the 173rd Airborne Brigade compares to a $170,000 Switchblade 600 loitering munition. The gap between those price points is where additive manufacturing finds its strongest case.

Metal Enters the Mix

If drones become the proof point for volume production with low-cost printers, the technology gains a template for other industries. The economics are hard to argue with: speed, customization, and the ability to print at the point of need.
