Elegoo has filed a patent application covering a new approach to tool changes on multi-nozzle 3D printers. The filing describes a mechanical arrangement designed to make nozzle swaps faster and more repeatable than current open-source toolchanger designs.
The application joins a crowded IP space. Prusa, Bondtech, and several independent makers already hold patents or pending applications around tool-changing systems. Elegoo's entry signals that the company intends to compete at the hardware architecture level, not just with finished printers.
What the filing covers
The patent application outlines a mounting system for multiple print heads that reduces the mechanical play introduced during a tool swap. Current toolchangers rely on rigid kinematic couplings, but tolerances between the coupling and the tool can introduce nozzle height and XY offset errors after every swap. Elegoo's design adds a compensation routine and a physical reference feature that brings the new nozzle back to a known position without requiring a full bed probe sequence.
If the system works as described, it would cut the time penalty of a tool change from several minutes to under a minute for most swaps. That matters on multi-color prints where dozens of tool changes per job are common.
Why it matters now
Multi-nozzle and tool-changing printers have moved from experimental kits to mainstream products in the last two years. Sovol's M1D raised $2 million in hours on Kickstarter. Bambu Lab's AMS system and Prusa's INDX have made multi-material printing accessible to beginners. The missing piece has been reliability: tool changes still fail or misalign often enough that many users stick to single-nozzle printing for critical jobs.
Elegoo already sells affordable multi-material machines like the Neptune series. A patented tool-change mechanism would give those machines a genuine differentiation point and could appear on future Neptune revisions or a dedicated industrial line.
