eSun is selling a PLA filament blended with recycled coffee grounds that releases a coffee aroma during printing.

eSun has started shipping PLA-Coffee, a filament that mixes recycled coffee grounds with standard polylactic acid. The result is a material that prints like ordinary PLA but smells like a fresh cup of coffee while it runs. The company is pitching it as a sustainability play and a novelty in equal measure.

The filament uses 1.75mm feedstock on standard one-kilogram spools. eSun recommends an extruder temperature between 210 and 230 degrees Celsius, a heated bed between 55 and 65 degrees Celsius, full cooling fan speed, and print speeds below 250 mm/s. Those settings sit well within the range of most entry-level and mid-range FDM printers, so you do not need specialized hardware to try it.

What the Material Actually Does

PLA-Coffee produces a matte finish with well-defined layer lines. eSun claims a balanced mix of strength, stiffness, and toughness that makes it suitable for concept models, prototypes, and general-purpose prints. The coffee grounds are finely dispersed throughout the filament, which means the aroma is consistent across the spool rather than concentrated in one spot.

The company also notes slight batch-to-batch color variation because of the natural coffee additive. If you are printing something where exact color matching matters, that is worth keeping in mind. For decorative pieces, props, and gifts, the variation is part of the appeal.

From a material science perspective, adding coffee grounds to PLA is not new, but eSun's version is positioned as a production-ready product rather than a maker experiment. The cellulose fibers in the coffee grounds can slightly alter flow characteristics, but eSun says the impact on nozzle wear and clogging is minimal compared with carbon-fiber-filled materials.

The Sustainability Angle

The coffee grounds are upcycled waste. Blending them into a biodegradable polymer reduces the amount of virgin material needed for each spool. The finished prints are still compostable in industrial facilities, assuming your local waste stream accepts PLA. The aroma is a secondary benefit, not the primary selling point, though it is the detail most people will remember.

This is part of a broader trend in filament manufacturing. Companies are experimenting with waste streams: coffee grounds, coconut shells, orange peels, and recycled plastics. Most of these materials remain niche, but PLA-Coffee is one of the few that is available through mainstream distributors rather than small-batch Etsy shops.

Should You Buy It?

If you print display pieces, cosplay props, or gifts, the smell and matte texture are genuine differentiators. A small vase or keychain printed in PLA-Coffee will stand out in a way that a white PLA print does not. The print quality is reliable, and the price is close to standard specialty PLA.

If you need dimensional stability or mechanical strength for functional parts, this is not the right material. Stick with CF-PA, PEEK, or even standard PETG for load-bearing prints. PLA-Coffee is a personality filament, and that is fine. Not every spool needs to earn its keep inside an enclosure.
