eSUN has commercialized a new PLA filament that blends recycled coffee grounds with biodegradable plastic, giving prints a natural matte finish.
What is PLA-Coffee
eSUN, the Shenzhen-based materials company, has started shipping PLA-Coffee, a filament made from recycled coffee grounds mixed with standard PLA. The company says the material keeps the ease of printing you expect from regular PLA while adding a speckled, matte surface that hides layer lines.
The production process dries and grinds spent coffee waste, then modifies the particles before compounding them into the polymer matrix. eSUN has done similar biomass work before with PLA-Wood, so this is a logical extension of that line.
Why it matters
Sustainable filaments are not new, but PLA-Coffee is different because it uses a genuine waste stream rather than bio-resins grown on purpose. Coffee consumption produces massive organic waste globally. Turning that into a useful creative material closes a small but real loop.
The coffee particles also change how light bounces off the print. Instead of shiny plastic glare, you get a soft, diffused surface. That makes the filament especially useful for home decor, planters, and desktop objects where visible layer lines would otherwise look rough.
Printing notes
eSUN recommends standard PLA settings: nozzle around 190-210C, bed around 60C. The company says the material works with most FDM printers without hardware changes. The presence of organic matter does not seem to affect reliability in early testing, though exact behavior can vary with moisture content in the coffee particles.
PLA-Coffee is now available through eSUN distributors and online platforms.
