A New Filament Aims to Make 1000mm/s FDM Printing Reliable

Wuhan-based eSUN has released PLA-HF, a high-speed PLA filament designed to keep print quality intact at daily speeds of 600mm/s and extreme mode speeds up to 1000mm/s. The company says the material is the next step in its high-speed filament line, following the 2022 introduction of PLA-HS and PLA+HS.

The challenge with high-speed FDM printing is that fast extrusion rates can cause poor layer adhesion, stringing, and detail loss. eSUN says PLA-HF addresses this through modified polymer chemistry and optimized cooling behavior. The filament is intended for machines with high-flow hotends and automated bed leveling, where the hardware can already keep up with the speed.

PLA-HF is available now through eSUN's global store and authorized resellers. The company has not published specific mechanical property data, but early user reports suggest the material is slightly more flexible than standard PLA, which may help with impact resistance at high speeds. The recommended nozzle temperature is not specified in the announcement, though eSUN's previous high-speed filaments typically print between 200C and 220C.

High-speed printing has become a battleground for filament manufacturers. Bambu Lab, Creality, and other machine makers have pushed printers toward 500mm/s and beyond, but the software and material ecosystem has not always kept pace. A filament specifically engineered for those speeds could reduce the tuning burden for users who want to push their machines without sacrificing reliability.

The 1000mm/s figure is eye-catching, but it is worth treating as an upper limit rather than a standard operating condition. Sustaining that speed requires a capable printer, a hardened steel nozzle, and careful calibration. Most users will likely see the biggest gains in the 400mm/s to 600mm/s range, where PLA-HF is designed to run consistently. If eSUN's formulation holds up in independent testing, it could become a default recommendation for owners of fast CoreXY and delta machines.
