Formlabs Brings Former Apple Executive Dan Riccio Into Boardroom

Formlabs has made a serious boardroom move. The Somerville-based 3D printing company brought in Dan Riccio, Apple's former Senior Vice President of Hardware Engineering, as a strategic advisor and investor. The August 12 announcement also marks a changing of the guard inside the company's founding generation.

Co-founder Natan Linder is stepping down as Chairman after fifteen years. He will stay on as a strategic advisor. CEO Maxim Lobovsky takes over the Chairman role. Dávid Lakatos, the company's Chief Product Officer and one of its earliest employees, becomes President and joins the board.

Riccio's arrival signals where Formlabs wants to go. He oversaw hardware design at Apple through the iPhone, iPad, and Apple Watch eras. That background in mass-manufactured precision hardware could help Formlabs push its SLA and SLS systems further into industrial production.

Board member Rob Willett is also increasing his stake alongside Riccio. The company says the moves position it for a new phase of growth and technology leadership.

The leadership refresh comes at a turning point for Formlabs. The company has grown from a Kickstarter-funded startup into the world's largest supplier of professional polymer 3D printing systems. Bringing in a veteran hardware operator like Riccio suggests the next chapter is about scaling, not just inventing.
