Industrial SLS at a Desktop Price Point

Formlabs has a habit of turning expensive manufacturing technology into something that fits through a standard office door. The new Fuse X1 is the latest example: a large-format selective laser sintering system starting at $84,999, which is far below the half-million-dollar setups that usually dominate this corner of additive manufacturing.

The numbers are ambitious. The Fuse X1 prints in a 330 x 330 x 565 mm build volume with packing density above 30%. Formlabs claims it cuts part cost by 50% and triples throughput compared with legacy industrial SLS and Multi Jet Fusion systems, all while taking up less than half the floor space.

It also runs on standard single-phase power and needs no specialized HVAC. Installation takes about an hour, and Formlabs says changeovers run five minutes. The pitch is clear: production-grade powder-bed fusion without the dedicated operator or the dedicated facility.

AI and Thermal Control

Two new technologies back the speed claims. Adaptive Thermal Control divides the build chamber into 13 independent thermal zones and samples thermal data 700 times more often than the Fuse 1+ 30W, which Formlabs says removes the packing constraints that normally slow large SLS jobs. AI-Powered Print Intelligence is supposed to catch failures before they ruin a build.

Early customers include Tesla, Radio Flyer, and Autotiv Manufacturing. Formlabs says those users printed more than 30,000 parts during the four-month pre-launch period. The system goes on sale now, with deliveries starting in Q4 2026. Parts will also be available through Formlabs' new Form Now online printing service.

Why It Matters

Large-format SLS has been stuck in two camps: cheap enough for prototyping but too small for real production, or big enough for production but priced like a house. The Fuse X1 is trying to split the difference. At $84,999 it is not cheap, but it is cheap enough to compete with traditional manufacturing for small and medium batch work.

Max Lobovsky, Formlabs CEO, put it plainly: "Customers no longer need to spend half a million dollars or dedicate an entire facility to manufacturing production-grade parts quickly and reliably." Whether the machine lives up to the throughput claims will become clear once units reach customers this fall.
